The role of University Police Officer is a hard to fill job that requires a very specific skill set. This posting describes the responsibilities and requirements for a University Police Officer role. University of Pennsylvania police officers are responsible for the operational law enforcement functions of the Division of Public Safety. These functions include protection of life and property, preservation of peace, maintenance of good order, and responding to calls for service. Mediate domestic and other disputes for the purpose of preserving peace and preventing crime. Identifies pre-delinquent and delinquent acts by children and youths by effective disposition of juvenile offenders. Interacts with various segments and individuals in the community to explain the functions of the Department and its responsibilities in the administration of justice. Attends public gatherings and protects the rights of the people to assemble peacefully as described in the Guidelines on Open Expression. Provides police and customer services, which include enforcing laws and regulations, counseling, first aid and general assistance as required. Utilizes proactive policing techniques to prevent criminal activity and to enhance the quality of life for the community. Regulates vehicular and pedestrian traffic to expedite its flow. Enforces Federal, State, City and University laws, ordinances and regulations through patrol investigations, inspections and through the apprehension and prosecution of violators. Investigates traffic accidents in order to compile and disseminate information essential to the needs of the interested parties, and for accident prevention and education of the public. Investigates criminal offenses and takes necessary steps to identify, arrest, and testify in the criminal justice proceedings. Prepares reports and maintains records essential to the effective operation and management of the Department. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience are required. Candidates for this position must possess Act 120 certification (must be a graduate of a Pennsylvania municipal police academy or a graduate of an out-of-state police academy program recognized by the Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission through the out of state waiver process with MPOETC) or actively enrolled in a Pennsylvania municipal police academy. Further, candidates must possess a valid driver's license and must be at least 21 years of age. This position is classified as essential personnel (24 hours/7 days), which may require weekend assignments and holiday assignments. The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE.
