Would you like to be part of the team that supports critical wastewater, stormwater, solid waste, and capital facility infrastructure for the largest county in Virginia?

This position assists with the planning, coordination, and implementation of all field activities related to forest pest management. Field activities can range from checking and processing forest pest monitoring traps, evaluating the health and condition of trees, and applying pesticides to treat for forest pests. Educates citizens about forest pest biology, impact, and control options. Delivers presentations at public information meetings and classrooms. Creates updates and distributes program publications. Works under the supervision of the Urban Forester III.

As an essential component of the county's sustainability and climate action commitments, the Urban Forestry Management Division promotes the health and vitality of the urban forest by providing a range of services, including tree planting, pest management, maintenance, and community outreach.

Note: This position is considered Emergency Services Personnel which requires the incumbent to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, agriculture or related field.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

+ A valid driver's license.

+ Pesticide Applicator (VA) within 12 months of hire.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as-needed basis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

+ Knowledge of urban forestry, forest pest management and arboricultural practices.

+ Knowledge of and the ability to conduct vegetation and forest pest surveys.

+ Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems software and the ability to generate maps, charts and associated reports using these technologies.

+ Certified Arborist Certification (International Society of Arboriculture).

+ Experience with communicating technical and semi-technical issues effectively, both orally and in writing, to a wide range of audiences.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to access tight spaces, crawl, reach, and stoop. Ability to bend, stoop, crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Work requires performing tasks in adverse weather conditions. Ability to be physically active for three hours at a time. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. Ability to perform field investigations. Ability to use hand tools. Ability to walk, negotiate or traverse sites in terrain that is not level. Ability to work in hot and cold temperatures. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
