General Statement of Duties: Performs routine to semi-skilled maintenance work with the City water, sewer and storm sewer distribution system; performs related duties as required. Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Utility Superintendent; receives work direction from the Utility Foreman. Supervision Exercised: None. Examples of Duties *Works on digging crew to locate and repair or replace service lines and make plumbing connections; may operate backhoe. *Assists with repair of sanitary sewers and manhole structures. *Assists at the water plants and lift stations as needed. *Assists with installation, replacement or repair of water mains. *Logs all repair work done on utilities and enters work done, parts used, service addresses, footages, completed and meter service information into GIS system. *Televises sewer lines, inspect lines to determine the location of the problem and records findings or notifies homeowners of their responsibility. *Operates a variety of equipment to maintain underground utilities that may include: front-end loaders, vac-truck, excavator, skid loader, dozer, backhoe, dump trucks, service trucks with cranes and welder. *Assist with snow removal from around lift stations and the water plants and may be asked to act as a backup to the street maintenance staff for snow events. *Restores or assists with restoring excavations to street grade after underground work is completed. *Assists with building and repairing storm sewers and inlets. *Sets up proper signage for traffic in work zones. *Ensures all trenching is properly shored and all safety precautions are followed in accordance with OSHA requirements; attends and follows competent person training. *Maintains fire hydrants including flushing and repair. *Ensures lift stations and water plant are operating properly during assigned on-call weekend. *Repairs, or replaces pumps and other maintenance work in sanitary and storm water lift stations *Notifies residents and businesses of water shutoffs and assists with shutting off water; repairs or replaces water shutoffs. *Performs daily pre-trip inspections and minor preventative maintenance on assigned vehicles(s). *Loads and hauls gravel, dirt, concrete, water and sewer lines and parts and other materials. *Responds to emergency callouts. *Performs building and equipment maintenance and repair work as needed, which may include: cleaning, plumbing, basic electrical painting, greasing, pump repair and general maintenance *Assist with generators in power outages. *Operates pumps to limit sewage flow during heavy rains to prevent sewer backups. *Assists other departments when requested. *Performs other duties as needed or assigned. Assists with locating underground utilities and tracing lines. May change light bulbs and check for any noticeable problems on the water tower. Typical Qualifications *Considerable knowledge of sewer, water and storm sewer distribution system maintenance operations. *Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and practices used in sewer and water distribution system maintenance and repair. *Considerable knowledge of the safety hazards and precautions necessary to perform water and sewer maintenance work. *Working knowledge of the traffic laws related to operating trucks and light and heavy equipment may be required. *Considerable ability to safely operate department equipment to maintain and repair sewer and water lines and storm sewers. *Considerable ability to perform heavy manual labor requiring continual use of large motor skills, bending, reaching, crouching, stretching, pushing, pulling, shoveling, twisting and turning to perform the work. *Considerable ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and less frequently lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds. *Considerable ability to see during the day and night, including good peripheral vision and color vision. *Considerable ability to maintain a good driving record and to drive safely and legally. *Considerable ability to work outside, year-round, including during inclement weather and extremes of temperature. *Considerable ability to work in confined spaces such as a lift station, storm sewer or utility hole. *Working ability to use fine motor skills, sometimes repetitively to manipulate hand tools and small parts. *Working ability to work with exposure to loud noises and fumes. *Working ability to communicate effectively with City staff and the public and to operate a radio and phone. *Working ability to read and follow written and oral instructions and to hear at a level sufficient to communicate with staff and avoid safety concerns. *Working ability to maintain balance while working at heights on occasion. *Ability to work nights and weekends as needed during emergency callouts. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduation from high school or GED equivalent with previous experience operating excavation equipment and/or maintaining and repairing underground utilities including storm and sanitary sewers, water mains; or any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess and maintain a valid state class A driver's license or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
