Duties & ResponsibilitiesUMM I, II, III Position Summary: Performs responsible unskilled and semi-skilled work in the installation, replacement, repair and preventive maintenance of water and sewer lines, pumping stations, and appurtenances. Employees are on-call and is subject to call-back work. UMM I Position Responsibilities:
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair to sewer lift stations; pulls pumps, cleans pumps and wet wells; checks generators and bypass pumps, and all other related structures.
  • Assist in the operation of the Vac-truck and jetting machine to regularly clean sewer lines, unstop blockages and all other town-related needs.
  • Performs permit required confined space entries into manholes, wet wells, check valve vaults, meter vaults, and related water and sewer appurtenances.
  • Records pump hours and averages for review by the Water Resources Superintendent.
  • Performs preventive maintenance to the water distribution system; flush water mains, flush hydrants, install auto flushers, and exercise valves.
  • Troubleshoots electrical and instrument equipment such as floats, relays, control panels and all other related structures to the pump station.
  • Assists in the application of herbicides around hydrants, valves, valve markers, manholes, pump stations and easements, as well as operating equipment to cut the undergrowth.
  • Repairs and replaces water and sewer lines, valves, hydrants, Air Release Valves (ARV) and all related structures.
  • Assists in the operation of the equipment used to inspect the collections system.
  • Operates various pieces of equipment needed to complete tasks.
  • Maintains necessary tools and inventory on departmental vehicles.
  • Operates tapping machine to make water and sewer taps; sets meter boxes; installs meters; performs pressure/volume tests.
  • Performs other related tasks as directed.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines.
  • Basic knowledge of the variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines and appurtenances.
  • Basic knowledge of the operation, maintenance and repair of sewer pump stations and appurtenances.
  • Working knowledge of the use of common hand and power tools.
  • Working knowledge of the safe use and operation of automotive and mechanical equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of maintaining accurate records.
  • Basic knowledge of the Occupational Hazards and Safety precautions needed in the work environment as well as Town policies and procedures.

UMM II Position Responsibilities:
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair to sewer lift stations; pulls pumps, cleans pumps and wet wells; checks generators and bypass pumps, and all other related structures.
  • Operates the Vac-truck and jetting machine to regularly clean sewer lines, unstop blockages and all other town-related needs.
  • Performs permit required confined space entries into manholes, wet wells, check valve vaults, meter vaults, and related water and sewer appurtenances.
  • Operates or assists in the operation of CCTV equipment to identify problem areas within the collections system.
  • Assists in the operation of the SLRAT (Sewer Line Rapid Assessment Tool).
  • Performs preventive maintenance to the water distribution system; flush water mains, flush hydrants, install auto flushers, and exercise valves.
  • Hooks up generators to lift stations during power outages.
  • Sets up bypass pumps for the collections system as well as pump around situations.
  • Records pump hours and averages for review by the Water Resources Superintendent.
  • Troubleshoots electrical and instrument equipment such as floats, relays, control panels and all other related structures to the pump station.
  • Applies herbicides around hydrants, valves, valve markers, manholes, pump stations and easements, as well as operating equipment to cut the undergrowth.
  • Repairs and replaces water and sewer lines, valves, hydrants, Air Release Valves (ARV) and all related structures.
  • Operates trucks, tractors, backhoes, excavators, vac-trucks, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Assists with the setup of work zones according to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Maintains necessary tools and inventory on assigned truck and keeps stocked and notifies crew leader of the needs for tools and inventory.
  • Operates tapping machine to make water and sewer taps; sets meter boxes; installs meters; performs pressure/volume tests.
  • Locates water and sewer main lines and services.
  • Performs other related tasks as directed.

UMM III Position Responsibilities:
  • Plans and participates in preventive maintenance and repair to sewer lift stations; pulls pumps, cleans pumps, cleans wet wells, checks generators and bypass pumps, and all other related appurtenances.
  • Plans and participates in the use of the Vac-truck and jetting machine to regularly clean sewer lines, unstop blockages, clean wet wells, and all other town related needs.
  • Plans and participates in permit required confined space entries into manholes, wet wells, check valve vaults, meter vaults, and related water and sewer appurtenances.
  • Plans and participates in the use of CCTV equipment to video log gravity sewer lines to find issues or notate current conditions; keeps accurate records of locations and conditions.
  • Plans and participates in the use of the Sewer Line Rapid Assessment Tool (SLRAT) to utilize ultra-sonic technology to assess sewer lines and maintain records of such work.
  • Plans and participates in preventive maintenance to the water distribution system; flush water mains, flush hydrants, install auto flushers, and exercise valves.
  • Records pump hours and averages for review by the Water Resources Superintendent.
  • Fills in for coworkers in their absence.
  • Hooks up generators at lift stations during power outages.
  • Sets up bypass pumps for the collections system for pump around situations and at lift stations.
  • Plans and participates herbicides around hydrants, valves, valve markers, manholes, pump stations, and easements, as well as operating equipment to cut undergrowth.
  • Plans and participates in the repair and replacement of water and sewer lines, valves, hydrants, Air Release Valves (ARV), and all related structures of the Distribution and Collection systems.
  • Coordinates equipment and labor to set up bypass pumps at the pump stations and in the collections system.
  • Coordinates with Emergency Management and the Public Information Dept. for all communication as it's related to Town work that requires public notification.
  • Plans and participates in collection system smoke testing, as well as follow through with repairs.
  • Proficiently operates trucks, tractors, backhoes, excavators, vac-trucks, and other mechanical equipment for all town needs.
  • May serve as the Backup Operator in Responsible Charge (Backup ORC) as needed or required for the distribution and/or collections system.
  • Assists with the training of all new employees.
  • Plans and participates in the execution of work zones according to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and flags traffic.
  • Maintains the necessary tools and inventory on departmental vehicles and keeps stocked and notifies crew leader of the needs for tools and inventory.
  • May be tasked with inspecting contractors who are working for the Town.
  • Proficiently operates tapping machine to make water and sewer taps; sets meter boxes; installs meters; performs pressure/volume tests.
  • Locate water and sewer main lines and services.
  • Performs other related tasks as directed.

Special Requirements, Education & ExperienceExperience and Requirements for UMM I:
  • Experience in construction - related utility work including heavy equipment operation.
  • Education required: High school diploma or GED, preferred other licenses/certification in Collections 1 and / or C-Distribution.
Experience and Requirements for UMM II:
  • Experience at the minimum of three years experience in the maintenance, operation, repair and or construction of water and sewer utility equipment and related facilities.
  • Education required: High school diploma or GED and C-Distribution and Grade 2 Collections, CDL (Class A w/Tanker).
Experience and Requirements for UMM III:
  • Experience: A minimum of five years of experience in the maintenance, operation, repair and or construction of water and sewer utility equipment and related facilities.
  • Education required: High school diploma or GED, other licenses/certifications B-Distribution, Grade 3 Collections, CDL (Class A w/Tanker).
