SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Foreperson, this position is responsible for the maintenance of water well fields; pump stations and water lines associated with delivering the well water to the City of Amarillo. Duties include planning maintenance schedules for the water well fields and associated pump stations. Directly supervises Maintenance Mechanics and Utility Workers. Implements and insures use of safety programs and safety equipment. This position will be required to work shifts including evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime as necessary by the department and during inclement weather. This position is considered weather essential personnel.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
* Maintains and repairs the water wells and pump stations, submersible pumps, pipe lines, pipe line appurtenances and chemical feed equipment.
* Performs various types of repairs to the buildings, well house and booster pumps.
* Performs various grounds upkeep.
* Supervises and schedules work for the well field Mechanics and Utility Workers.
* Directs the annual well field efficiency study.
* Coordinates with the Field Maintenance Supervisor when wells are being repaired and out of service for extended periods of time.
* Assists the Field Maintenance Supervisor with maintaining proper repair parts inventory and chemical storage for the pump stations.
* Assists the Field Maintenance Supervisor in scheduling major repair projects.
* Assists and inspects the work done by the mechanics in the well fields and pump stations.
* Assists in interviewing for vacancies and or promotions and for pay for performance evaluations.
* Maintains well records and repair records and oversees preventative maintenance programs.
* Assists the Field Maintenance Supervisor with budgeting for the Water Production Department needs.
* Assists other departments with special projects.
* Assists in writing specifications and requisitions for improvements and repair projects.
* Inspects work and keep records on projects done by contractors and city crews.
* Works overtime and responds to callbacks by phone as required by workload or emergencies.
* Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Requires a High School Diploma or its equivalent, with a minimum of three years of experience in the water utility maintenance field. One year of experience in a supervisory role is preferred. Degree in Industrial Maintenance preferred. Must have and maintain a Class C Groundwater Operators License. Must have and maintain a valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver's License, with Hazmat and Tanker endorsement. Must have and maintain a Chemical Applicator's License from the Texas Department of Agriculture and a welding Certification. A BPAT License and CSI License issued by the TCEQ preferred. Incumbent shall have a working telephone for after hours call back.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
* Ability to lead a crew of maintenance personnel in performing routine and more difficult projects under sometimes adverse conditions.
* Ability to operate small office equipment, including copy machines and scanners.
* Ability to operate computers for data entry and word processing.
* Ability to read and write English must have strong verbal and written communication skill.
* Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.
* Ability to safely operate and repair equipment and machinery, such as scissor lifts, forklifts, or commercial mowers.
* Ability to take measurements and do mathematical computations as required by the job duties..
* Ability and experience in the use of basic hand and power tools including lawn care equipment or demonstrate the aptitude necessary to being trained in their use.
* Ability to work in confined spaces and other areas or projects that require the use of respiratory safety equipment such as paper masks, half mask respirators, hoods, full face respirators, positive air supplied masks and self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
* Ability to drive/operate various types of equipment used in this industry.
* Knowledge of water production and water wells and state regulations pertaining to them.
* Ability to safely operate tractors, loaders, ditchers, backhoes, well rigs and dump trucks.
* Ability to safely operate basic hand tools, precision measurement tools, volt-ohm meters, meggers, welder and oxygen acetylene torch, air compressors, water pumps, air breathing apparatus and respiratory safety equipment.
* Ability to establish policies for using, acquiring, and/or maintaining heavy or complex machinery.
* Ability to supervise employees using or repairing heavy or complex machinery.
* Ability to operate and repair small/light equipment, such as power tools.
* Ability to complete maintenance training courses as outlined by the Maintenance Foreman.
