General PurposeUnder general supervision, supervise the laboratory samplers, coordinate, administer and oversee the chain of custody program controlling water, wastewater and sludge samples in accordance with federal and state regulatory agency guidelines. Typical DutiesOversee Chain-of-Custody program. Involves: Sample scheduling and collection for water, wastewater, sludge and industrial pretreatment samples. Log in samples into the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), brought to laboratory in accordance with federal and state regulatory agency guidelines. Check for evidence of proper handling and sampling techniques. Report any discrepancies in samples. Log sample information into the LIMS, by assigning the tests to a sample and to the different laboratory departments, aliquot, preserve and set up for analysis. Pack and ship samples to contract laboratories. Follow all chain-of-custody and sampling handling procedures. Coordinate routine permit, water complaint and special project sampling. Coordinate the sample delivery to laboratory. Notify laboratory that will be receiving the sample for analysis. Distribute samples to the appropriate laboratory departments.Maintain inventory of sampling supplies and materials. Involves: Provide and order all supplies including all types of sample containers and sampling equipment for the shipment of samples to contract laboratories, industrial pretreatment inspectors, engineers and solid waste departments for storm water sampling, or any section needing sampling supplies. Create, maintain and track samples in LIMS from time of collection to time of disposal. Prepare documents for proper shipping. Maintain logs of all pertinent information to maintain legal defensibility. Assist in the collecting of a variety of samples. Involves: Receive and resolve inquiries and complaints related to water quality. Conduct on-site investigation to resolve issues or develop corrective actions. Back up Laboratory Sampler in the collection of bacteriological route required by TCEQ. Collect bacteriological samples for distribution system to comply with State requirements. Assist Industrial Pretreatment with Chain-of-Custodies and containers needed for collection sites. Assist with permit requirements. Instruct other personnel in appropriate sample collection, sample site selection, sample storage, chemical and utility safety, chain-of-custody procedures, preservation techniques and termination of required analysis. Instruct other personnel in the use of field sampling and testing equipment. Receive and inspect the laboratory shipments of chemicals and consumables.Supervise assigned staff: Involves schedule, assign, instruct, guide and check work. Appraise employee performance. Provide for training and development, enforce personnel rules and regulations and work behavior firmly and impartially. Counsel, motivate and maintain harmony. Interview applicants.
