Job DescriptionGENERAL SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Utilities Maintenance Superintendent and designee. Works as a member of a crew performing general and preventative maintenance and repairs on water lines, fire hydrants, sanitary sewers, manholes, and appurtenances, including restoration. Sets up traffic control devices. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Works as a member of a crew performing general and preventative maintenance and repairs on water lines, hydrants, sanitary sewers, manholes and appurtenances which includes restoration, inspecting, cleaning, flushing and maintaining.
- Maintains operational portable pumps.
- Performs general maintenance on county buildings and property including, but not limited to, lawn maintenance, cleaning, painting, and snow removal.
- Sets up traffic control devices such as cones and barricades at work sites to move traffic safely and effectively around work area.
- Drive and operate department equipment, including CDL required equipment.
- Assists in cleaning and unplugging sanitary sewers and pumping station wet wells.
- Recognizes unsafe working conditions and reports them to the Utilities Crew Leader.
- May be required to perform emergency minor repairs to equipment on job site.
- May provide training and assistance to other maintenance division employees.
- May provide work direction to the summer seasonal employees.
- Remains current on new trends and innovations in the field of water distribution and wastewater collection system operation and maintenance.
- Additional duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Skill in operating a variety of equipment (e.g. vehicles, water distribution and wastewater collection system maintenance devices) including power tools (e.g. jack hammer, air spades, air wrenches, air compressors, portable trash pumps, and hand tools such as shovels, picks, hammers and wrenches) in a safe and effective manner.
- Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Ability to read and write common vocabulary.
- Ability to work without constant supervision.
- Knowledge of materials and equipment used by the Sanitary Engineer Department (may be developed after employment).
- Knowledge of construction standards and ability to read construction plans (may be developed after employment).
- Good physical condition, which includes the ability to freely use arms and hands to lift pumps or move manhole covers.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy loads in a variety of difficult conditions.
UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS: - Exposed to inclement weather.
- Work in heavy traffic.
- Work around heavy construction equipment.
- May work in nighttime conditions.
- Overtime may be required.
EQUIPMENT: Dump truck, jet/vactor truck, backhoe, pick-up truck, televising truck and equipment, crew truck, landscaping truck, pumps, generators, jack hammer, and a variety of hand and power tools and equipment necessary to operate and maintain sanitary sewer and water systems. QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Valid drivers license or valid driving privileges in the State of Ohio.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL)-Class B without air brake restriction and with tanker endorsement or must be able to successfully obtain within six (6) months of assuming position.
- Employees who have passed the Wastewater Collection and Water Distribution courses (or equivalent operator courses) will be immediately promoted to the Utilities Worker II position with a valid Class B CDL (w/o air break restriction and tanker endorsement).
