Job Summary:The Utility Worker assists skilled workers in performing assigned duties across various tasks in a project. The role primarily involves manual labor tasks that require basic knowledge of tools and safety protocols. This role may be assigned to one specifictask or may transition between tasks based on project requirements.
Key Responsibilities:- Set up barricades and traffic cones; act as a flagman to direct traffic as needed.
- Break ground or pavement using jackhammers or other prescribed methods.
- Dig trenches using shovels or other tools and tamp and backfill trenches.
- Perform various manual labor duties as needed to complete assigned projects.
- Work on-call duty, including holidays, nights, weekends, and unscheduled overtime as required.
- Work with tools, equipment, and materials, ensuring safe handling and use.
- Observe and report the status of equipment.
- Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations and codes.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Operate equipment for the installation of electrical and gas lines, including backhoes, trenching machines, dump trucks, boring machines, and air compressors.
- Assist in the construction of duct banks, manholes, natural gas mains, and distribution lines.
- Provide support to Journeymen to complete assigned jobs.
- Use equipment properly to avoid excessive wear and tear.
- Assist in the installation of customer electrical and natural gas services.
- Follow all safety protocols and demonstrate safety-conscious behavior while working on projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to dig, spread, and level dirt, gravel, and sand.
- Ability to load and unload materials manually or with equipment like a forklift.
- Proficiency in performing tasks requiring dexterity with hands and tools, such as dismantling forms, removing concrete, and cutting insulation material.
- Capability to transport tools, equipment, and materials to and around the worksite.
- Ability to work in confined spaces such as manholes and vaults.
Preferred Qualifications:- Basic understanding of safety protocols for operating heavy equipment and tools.
- Experience working with electrical or gas line installation projects.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently when needed.
- Previous experience in assisting skilled workers in construction or utility projects.
