Varsity Assistant Coach - Boys Basketball

Winter Season

2024 - 2025

Battle Ground Public Schools is seeking a dedicated Assistant Varsity Coach to support the head coach in leading, developing, and inspiring our sports teams in alignment with the philosophy and purpose of education-based athletic programs. The successful candidate will embody a strong ethical foundation, promote character development, and possess knowledge of various sports skills, tactics, safety, and injury prevention. This role requires a commitment to fostering a positive sport experience, lifelong participation in physical activities, and the holistic development of athletes.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Philosophy and Ethics:

* Assist in developing and communicating a sound coaching philosophy that aligns with the district and WIAA rules

and regulations.

* Promote a positive sports experience and the benefits of lifelong physical activity.

Character Development:

* Model and emphasize growth mindset, honesty, respect, sportsmanship, integrity, and responsibility.

* Help establish high behavioral standards for coaches and athletes and communicate the program's Core Covenants.

Sport Skills and Tactics:

* Support the head coach in mastering and teaching the skills, combinations, strategies, and tactics of the specific

sport.

* Assist in scouting for planning practices, game preparation, and analysis.

Safety and Injury Prevention:

* Ensure a safe environment for practices and competitions.

* Hold First Aid/CPR certifications and provide immediate care for injuries.

Teaching and Communication:

* Help create a positive learning environment and utilize effective communication to enhance learning and group

success.

* Assist in evaluating and preparing written practice plans, monitor goals, and incorporate mental skills to reduce

sport anxiety.

Organization and Administration:

* Demonstrate efficiency in contest management and legal responsibilities.

* Assist in managing information, documents, records, and fulfill risk management procedures.

Physical Conditioning:

* Support the head coach in implementing a conditioning program based on exercise physiology and biomechanical

principles.

* Advocate for proper nutrition and drug-free sport participation.

Evaluation:

* Help implement effective team performance evaluation techniques.

* Assist in conducting objective evaluations of athletes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Strong understanding of WIAA and district rules and regulations

* Ability to develop and communicate a clear coaching philosophy

* Certification in First Aid/CPR

* Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills

Attachment Requirements and Hints

Extra Curricular positions require a cover letter and documentation of current First Aid and CPR certification. If you are in the process of obtaining certification, please upload a document to that effect in place of the First Aid/CPR attachment or upload a statement of willingness to attend a district provided First Aid/CPR class.

Benefits

This position is not benefit or retirement eligible at time of hire. It could become eligible if position changes to meet the criteria.

This position is entitled to sick leave as prescribed by CBA or WA State Law.
