Salary: $37,744.20 Annually Location : Government Services Center - Westtown, PA Job Type: Full Time, Non Exempt Job Number: 01991 Department: Community Transit Division: Community Transit Opening Date: 07/26/2024 Closing Date: Continuous Weekly Hours: 37.5 Shift: 8:30am-4:30pm Summary The Vehicle Custodian is a position that is responsible for performing general servicing of vehicles and facilities, general and detail cleaning, shuttling and fueling vehicles in accordance with the Department of Community Transit's procedures and guidelines. Essential Duties
- Complies with safety policies and regulations while using a variety of hand and power tools common to the trade, using proper safety procedures, wearing personal protective equipment and complying with safety policies and procedures. Completes all safety training as required.
- Transports vehicles by safely driving vehicles to staging areas for cleaning, parking vehicles according to supervisory parameters, driving vehicles off-site as necessary for pick-up or emergencies.
- Determines the condition of vehicle by inspecting vehicle before and after use; logging inspection; and reporting requirements. Periodically compares vehicle defect cards with vehicle reporting to check for damage. Alerts supervisor/manager as to the extent of any damage.
- Ensures County vehicles are kept functioning and ready for service byfueling, checking fluids, reviewing and reporting damage.
- Contributes to customer satisfaction by ensuring vehicles are ready for service bytimely completing all checklist procedures for the interior and exterior, ensuring vehicles have been thoroughly cleaned either by hand and as required by the bus wash. Posting and removing notices in vehicles, checking and filling brochure racks.
- Conserves and maintains supplies by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results; monitoring cleaning supplies, checking inventory; anticipating and requesting needed supplies
- Provides vehicle information by answering questions and requests from managers and supervisors
- Documents actions by completing all paperwork and logs as required
- Maintains a clean and safe work area by clearing floors and work surfaces of trash and debris, returning working materials and equipment to proper storage area, and cleaning up spills. Assists in snow removal or other event causes to maintain building accessibility and prevention/clean-up.
- Maintains high ethical standards by ensuring compliance with safety and required checklists and regulations.
- Maintains trust, confidence and a positive image of the organization bykeeping information confidential and disclosing only on a need-to-know basis; ensuring high ethical standards for self; and using good customer service skills with both internal and external customers.
- Ensures communication and positive image of Department and County byreviewing critical incidents, exceptions to policy and/or goal achievement with Fleet Manager.
- Maintains cooperative relationship with coworkers and management bycommunicating necessary information, responding to requests, building rapport; and participating in problem-solving methods.
- Contributes to effective communications within the organization byestablishing and maintaining effective communication lines with all staff members and general public. Keeps management and staff informed of critical incidents and information needed to ensure smooth operations.
- Maintains knowledge/skills by attending training sessions; reviewing and interpreting service and instruction manuals, completing all necessary certifications.
- Responds to emergency situations by driving transit vehicles to back-up operators or dispatchers.
- Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.
Qualifications/Preferred Skills, Knowledge & ExperienceRequired Skills, Knowledge & Experience:Education: This position does not require a high school degree or GED equivalent. Experience: At least six (6) months of driving experience, with some previous general work experience. Experience in public transit/transportation as an operator is highly desirable. This includes a minimum of 18 years of age, acceptable driving record, and background verification in accordance with Chester County Department of Community Transit standards. Qualifications / Requirements:
- Basic skill to use a personal computer and various software packages.
- Maintaining logs and records.
- Ability to work independently and proceed with objectives.
- Ability to work extended hours, as necessary.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, an individual is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear and climb stairs. Occasionally, an individual will need to sit, bend at the waist while working, reach or work with arms above shoulders, kneel, stoop, crouch or squat. The specific vision requirement listed for this position is:
- Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less)
Work Environment: Duties will typically be performed in an outdoor environment (where the noise level is moderate to loud). Duties may occasionally be performed at off-site locations, which may necessitate dealing with excessive heat or cold and/or moderate to loud noise levels. Certificates / Licenses / Clearances Required: This position requires the following documents to be obtained, reviewed as acceptable by the supervisor, and re-obtained every five (5) years:

- Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card issued by a company-authorized healthcare provider
Must possess valid PA motor vehicle operator's license that is not under suspension or revocation and possess current automobile insurance coverage.
