Job Responsibilities
Overhauls and makes repairs to engines, including gasoline, diesel, and 2 cycle engines. Repairs and rebuilds transmissions and differentials and standard and automatic transmissions; repairs conventional brake systems; rebuilds carburetors and repairs fuel injection system in engines; makes repairs to exhaust systems, including replacing mufflers and tail pipes. Uses diagnostic equipment to check vehicles charging and starting systems and make repairs as necessary. Makes mechanical repairs to drawbridges within Horry County , including setting gates and replacing wedge arms and broken shifts or gears. Makes and fabricates parts for equipment using electric welder. Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12 hour shifts.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
