Internal Posting - Only temporary or permanent North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) employees in a temporary full-time, temporary part-time, permanent full-time, permanent part-time, probationary, trainee, or time-limited position or a layoff candidate with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by General Statute (GS) 126 (State Personnel Act) may apply.

This position will serve as a lead worker and perform semi-skilled and skilled small engine, automotive, heavy equipment and/or tire repair work. Assist as a fill on for the shop supervisor in his absence. Employees perform a wide range of progressively responsible tasks involving the service, inspection, repair, rebuild and diagnosis of a diverse number of mechanical systems for a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Work ranges from inspection and service to highly complex mechanical and electrical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software; conducting parts/systems failure analysis; and the calibration, adjustment and operation of engine diatonic tools. Standard operational guidelines, shop safety procedures, vendor manuals and manufacturer publications and bulletins are normally established, and employees apply technical knowledge and skills, occasionally modifying standard practice and procedures due to unusual situations. Employees must routinely determine materials, techniques, and tools to accomplish work assignments, oftentimes in the capacity of a team lead role with limited to no direct supervision. Work assignments vary in complexity depending on the type of mechanical system and ancillary components/equipment. Assignments are normally received in the form of written or verbal work orders, which usually indicate the general nature of the task or describe the nature of the problem. New or unusual assignments may be accompanied by more detailed instructions. Work is performed under general supervision and may be reviewed and inspected in progress or upon completion. This position is located in Gaston County Equipment Shop. Applications must be received no later than 11:59 pm on the closing date of posting.

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

* Experience in Heating and A/C repairs including electronic and vacuum controls

* Experience in performing electrical/ electronic diagnostics and repair of complex wiring on two of the following: light, medium, heavy duty trucks and heavy equipment

* Experience in performing hydraulic system diagnostics, repairs, and rebuilds on a variety of equipment

* Experience in troubleshooting and repair of a minimum of two of the following: light, medium, heavy duty or farm equipment brake components

* Experience in troubleshooting complex electrical/electronic systems

Additional Expectations:

Knowledge and ability to perform a number of widely varying diverse assignments that require in-depth analysis and diagnostic work. Prefer experience in Preventive Maintenance, A/C, Heating/Vent, Instruments and Gauges, Brakes, Steering, Suspension, Tires, Wheels/Rims, Hubs and Bearings, Axle Driven Rear, Clutch, Drive Shaft, Manual Trans, Auto Trans, Charging Sys, Cranking Sys, Ignition Sys, Lighting Sys, Air Intake, Cooling Sys, Exhaust, Fuel Sys, Power Plant, Horns/Alarms, Power Takeoff, Hydraulics, Body/Cargo, Lines and Pumps, Cab and Sheet Metal, Axles Ft and Rr, Frame, Electrical Access, Cargo Handling, Restraints, Lift Sys, Trailer and Frame, Compressor, Engine Aux, Valves and Safety Devices.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. A Release Form (ALCDRG-01) and Background Statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three (3) years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety Toe Shoes are required within 30 days of employment.

Employee is required to furnish a complete set of mechanic tools. Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to follow appropriate post-emergency procedures. Ability to lead shop safety efforts and regularly communicate safety-related operational items. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals and use diagnostic tools. Must have physical strength and dexterity sufficient to move relatively heavy objects.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three (3) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.
