Job Description:
General Function: $26.94 - $35.01 HourlyUnder the general supervision of the Director of Airfield and Grounds Maintenance and the Fleet Manager, responsible for skilled repair and maintenance work gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, including heavy construction equipment, firefighting, and snow removal equipment, as well as any non-powered accessories.Core Competencies:
  • Inspects, diagnoses, and repairs mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs general overhauling.
  • Assist contractor as needed for mechanical repairs on Passenger boarding bridges.
  • Performs welding and fabrication work.
  • Repairs and maintains pumps, lights, steering gears, starters, generators, universal joints, and hydraulic systems.
  • Adjusts and repairs and/or replaces brakes.
  • Maintains records of repairs made; orders parts; makes emergency repairs in the field.
  • Maintains work areas and equipment in a clean, safe, and orderly fashion.
  • Performs snow removal as assigned.
  • Subject to emergency call-in.
  • Performs other assignments and duties as directed.
Employment Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License and maintain appropriate Authority driving privileges.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces, rough terrain and have safe work and driving habits.
  • Demonstrated experience operating skid steer loaders, front-end loaders, backhoes and dump trucks.
  • Must have the ability to access and operate all equipment and vehicles.
  • Must provide own complete set of hand tools.
  • Must be detailed oriented with strong organizational and basic analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently, while exercising sound judgement.
  • Disciplined work ethic: Must occasionally work extended hours and is subject to emergency call-backs.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills. Will be required to use personal computer and / or PDA for work order system, email, and training.
  • Ability to effectively communicate over a two-way radio, email, phone, and person-to-person.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret instructions, short correspondence, and memos and ask clarifying questions to ensure understanding.
  • Ability to understand and carry out general instructions in standard situations. Ability to solve problems in standard situations.
  • May work in inclement weather and have ability to navigate all areas where work is performed and/or assigned.
  • Must pass criminal history background check and maintain eligibility for a security access badge in accordance with the Airport Security Plan.
Education/Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED and completion of technical program in vehicle mechanics.
  • A Minimum of 5 years' experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
  • ASE certification or obtain within two (2) years of date of hire.
The Airport Vehicle Mechanic will work as part of a team to maintain all Airport owned vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure the safety and comfort of Airport employees, tenants, visitors, and the traveling public. Duties may vary according to job assignment. This position is a standard 1st shift (7:00AM-3:30PM).Physical/Environmental Requirements:This position is primarily performed in a garage/shop setting but may be required to work outside in varying weather conditions. The position requires frequent movement from one work location to another over uneven or inconsistent surfaces. Which also involves exposure to noise, vibrations, chemical, and other contaminants, moving mechanical hazards, and extremes of temperature and weather conditions. Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses; sufficient auditory ability, with or without audio logical devices; able to tolerate exposure to noise levels up to 120 decibels; capable of being on one's feet for extended periods of time. Additional physical requirements include stooping, standing, walking, lifting, pushing climbing stairs/ladders and the ability to lift/carry 50 lbs. unassisted. Must be able to distinguish colors as required to discern light-gun signals from the Air Traffic Control Tower. This class specification should not be interpreted as all inclusive.
