Support/Hourly - Position - Mechanic Job Number 000####### Start Date Open Date 11/28/2023 Closing Date ROLE AND PURPOSE
  • To contribute to the safe and efficient operation of District Fleet vehicles by performing needed repairs and required maintenance to maintain vehicle readiness.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution, required
  • Class B CDL w/ P and S endorsements within 90 days of employment, required
  • Obtain a Texas School Bus Driver Training Certificate within 90 days of employment, required
  • State Vehicle Inspector License within 90 days of employment, required
  • Must maintain a driving record that meets District standards
  • Specialized courses in propane, gas, diesel repair on light/heavy duty vehicles (College or Vocational), preferred
Experience:
  • One year experience as a vehicle repair technician, required
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Perform inspections of vehicles as required by DOT. Perform preventative maintenance inspections required and specified by manufacturer and departmental standards. Inspections include checks on all systems, oil changes, lube, transmission service, etc.
  • Repair, adjust and troubleshoot air brake systems including air compressors, air dryers, air lines, governors, air valves, and relay valves.
  • Inspect front and rear suspension, repair or replace suspension components, spring hangers, king pins, bushings, torque rods, swing arms, lines, hoses, hubs, and bearings
  • Inspect and service air and hydraulic brake systems including brake shoes, pads, drums, rotors, bearings and warning systems
  • Troubleshoot cooling, charging and starting systems on all Transportation Department vehicles. Remove and replace components related to these systems on both the light and heavy duty vehicles
  • Inspect and troubleshoot fuel systems. Repair or replace pumps, injectors, injection pumps and mechanical/electric controls, throttle body assemblies, lines, hoses and tanks as needed
  • Inspect and repair air conditioning systems and components on both light and heavy duty vehicles
  • Perform other duties as assigned
EQUIPMENT USED:
  • Power and hand tools, welding equipment, hydraulic jack, brake lathe, micrometers and other tools and equipment related to light and heavy duty vehicles maintenance.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, frequent exposure to diesel and propane fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.
