Central Virginia Community College is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. CVCC is a comprehensive two-year institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students in occupational/technical programs and university-parallel/college transfer programs.
As the CVCC VA School Certifying Official (SCO), the role requires a comprehensive understanding of federal and state financial aid and Veteran Affairs regulations, as well as CVCC and VCCS policies. The SCO works strategically to ensure ongoing compliance with these guidelines, serving as a primary contact for VA compliance reviews and collaborating closely with auditors to provide necessary documentation. This position involves advising students, staff, faculty, and the public on financial aid and Veterans benefits both in person and over the telephone, assisting them in navigating the application processes for these benefits. Additionally, the SCO maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant regulations and informs the Admissions and Records Office and Accounting Office of any changes.
The SCO is also responsible for a range of supportive tasks, including updating forms, informational brochures, and the veteran website, as well as conducting financial aid and veterans' benefits workshops on and off campus. The role involves counseling and advising students on various financial aid and VA benefit opportunities and processes. This position will also inform them about different sources of assistance for financing their education. Responsibilities also include creating and responding to correspondence related to veterans' benefits and financial aid, providing training to staff on regulatory changes and best practices, attending veteran-related events, scanning important documents, and managing communications received through voicemails and emails.
This position reports to the Coordinator of Financial Aid as part of the Student Services division.
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
