Job Description:
The Shelter Veterinarian is responsible for the daily care and treatment of all hospitalized shelter animals, injury/ isolation animals, foster animals, and any other shelter animals. This includes but is not limited to conducting rounds on shelter animals, completing vet checks for new animals to the shelter, and completing surgeries for shelter animals. The Shelter Veterinarian will be part of a team and support staff providing excellent care for shelter animals. We see a wide range of interesting medical and surgical cases as well as the standard and spay/neuter. This position does not see regular outside clients. This role would be an excellent opportunity for veterinarians looking to expand their surgical skills and shelter medicine experience. Veterinarians can expect to make a real difference in the lives of people and animals in Glynn County with our shelter program. Examines animals, evaluates animals' health, and performs veterinary medical and surgical procedures including vaccinations, prescribing, and administering of medications, anti-parasite treatments, orders, and interprets other testing as needed. Completes behavioral evaluations and modification, dietary evaluations, and grooming (healthy coat maintenance). Orders medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery. Provides direction to staff responsible for following prescribed treatment and maintaining treatment records for animals brought into the shelter; ensures the highest level of service and care are provided and that changes in animals' conditions are recorded. Performs all necessary euthanasia according to established protocol. Oversees cleaning and animal handling for adherence to protocol in the shelter for prevention of infectious/zoonotic disease. Establishes and maintains medical record and drug use logs to standards of veterinary and sheltering practices; ensures records are in order and complete. Ensures compliance with all state and federal laws, regulations, policies, and procedures regarding clinic operations, the practice of veterinary medicine, drug control, and animal care and handling. Performs medical rounds, prescribing treatments for, and making recommendations for the disposition of shelter animals. Actively promotes the GCAS's programs and events to the community. Always represents the GCAS in a professional and courteous manner. Provides quality service to volunteers and staff recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization. Communicate with staff about medical complications and recommendations. Qualifications: Must possess a Doctoral Degree of Veterinary Medicine Currently licensed in Georgia to practice Veterinary Medicine. Georgia State Pharmacy license and DEA license. Effective decision-making and diagnostic skills Knowledge of shelter animal health protocols, surgical procedures, and companion animal health issues. Able to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks at one time. Committed to the mission, vision, and values of the GCAS.
