Who are you: You have a passion for rehabilitating a variety of wildlife animals, ensuring the Wildlife Rehabilitation Program patients receive the highest quality veterinary medical care, performing procedures, medical evaluations, and treatment of wildlife. You enjoy communicating and educating staff, regarding medical issues, zoonotic diseases and specific animal population diseases. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Examine, diagnose, and prescribe treatment for animals in Wildlife Rehabilitation Program as needed and as appropriate. Provide emergency medical care as needed. As part of the Veterinary team, work collaboratively with wildlife managers to recognize, contain, and treat contagious diseases, including zoonotic diseases. Collaborate with the Director of Operations and Wildlife Rehabilitation Manager to establish and implement veterinary medical policies and procedures as appropriate. Ensure animal medical records are maintained as required by law. Provide wildlife staff with clear and concise information regarding the medical condition, diagnosis, treatment plan and long-term prognosis. Pursue adequate and appropriate continuing education. Perform diagnostic tests including x-ray, blood work, cytology, and fecals. Provide leadership and direction to Registered Veterinary Technicians. Induce and maintain animals under anesthesia. Operate anesthetic machine and surgical monitoring equipment. Ensure that all animals are monitored while under anesthesia. Work with Wildlife Manager to ensure department equipment in good working order. Euthanize and/or assist with euthanasia of animals as needed in accordance with PHS/SPCA policies and procedures and California state law. Perform animal necropsies and write reports as needed. This may include providing reports for other PHS/SPCA departments and/or partner animal welfare agencies. Maintain DEA license for LECCWC and San Jose satellite location. Attend continuing education seminars. Maintain a clean and sanitary work area in all workspaces. Work collaboratively with all members of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Program. Supervisory Responsibilities: Indirectly supervises Registered Veterinary Technicians Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Upon hire, must pass a background check. Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree with two or more years of experience in wildlife setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working in a fast-paced environment; preferably in a wildlife medicine environment. Proficient with WORMD Database and Microsoft Office Suite within probationary period (first six months from hire date). Valid California Veterinary Medical License. Valid California Drivers License with a satisfactory record to be insured on PHS license. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 50-75 pounds. Must reliably commute to Saratoga.
