Primary Purpose

To experience Mountaire's culture first-hand and provide additional exposure of Mountaire's family-oriented work environment. Fulfill all designated duties within each specialized area of operation for the duration of the internship. This program is intended to provide learning opportunities by working hands-on with mentors and completing assigned projects. The Intern will research and gather data related to bird health, welfare, and biosecurity across all areas of live operations with a focus on hatcheries, grow out, and breeder operations. Day to day activities will include collecting the following types of data: serology, virology, necropsy, and embryo assessments in various types of productions units and regions. The project will aim to improve bird health and welfare in the broiler production unit.

Primary Project

* Travel to various areas of live operations in North Carolina, Delaware, and the Eastern shores of Virginia and Maryland to research project objectives and collect data

* Maintain detailed and organized records of data collected

* Shadow broiler and breeder supervisors as well a to learn their roles in the company and in flock health

* Shadow production veterinarian to learn about their role in bird health, welfare, biosecurity, and marketing programs

* Will learn how an integrated broiler company operates and measures success metrics including the importance of population medicine to facilitate the success of broiler production

Duties/Activities Required by Job

* Complete assigned project identified by department mentor

* Attend weekly seminar series across different Mountaire facilities

* All interns must be available to travel to Delaware during the last week of the program for final presentations (August 5 - 7, 2025)

* All interns are required to complete a 10 minute presentation on their project at the conclusion of summer. Presentations will take place in Millsboro, DE at the Administrative Building during the week of August 4-8th.

* All interns must complete a mid-way evaluation (week 5) along with a final evaluation (week 10)

Education/Experience Requirements

* Must be currently enrolled and pursuing an Associate or Bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university.

* Preference will be given to students actively pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine or related food animal field

* Strong Veterinary interest. Specific in population medicine and poultry

* Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

* Basic understanding of avian anatomy

* Good communication and interpersonal skills

* Self motivated and able to organize and realize project goals

* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

* Able to work in harsh environments (hot, humid, dusty)

* Valid Driver's License and good driving record, and ability to drive frequently
