What we want
The Veterinary Technician I, under the supervision of a Veterinary Technician II or higher, provides assistance to faculty, staff and students with patient care and treatments. Maintains a clean, sanitary and functionally well-organized service area within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Compensation will be commensurate to selected hire's experience.
The hours for this position are Friday, Saturday and Sunday 1p-2a. This position is also eligible for a shift differential.
Required Education and Experience:
* Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any combination of relevant education and experience.
* Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and billing entry.
* Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes, defibrillators, nebulizers, and monitoring equipment.
* Ability to plan, organize and complete tasks efficiently and effectively.
* Able to appropriately handle and restrain canine and feline patients with methods that are both fear free and feline friendly.
* Ability to communicate professionally, effectively, and positively with all individuals in a veterinary medical teaching hospital.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Associate Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician
* Basic and Advanced CPR certification through RECOVER
Responsibilities:
* Clinical and Technical Responsibilities: Provides technician assistance to small animal clinical and support services. Assists faculty, residents, interns, and students with patient care. Instructs, guides, and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Monitors patients for any change in clinical status. Provides proper physical restraint to allow for safe handling of patients. Keeps patients clean and well groomed. Places and maintains IV catheters and administers patient treatments as prescribed by the clinician. Collects or assists with the collection of the patient's blood, urine, and tissue samples. Properly submits any required medical record request, such as anesthesia, bloodwork, radiology, etc. Provides support to the hospital pharmacy. Provides support as a circulating or scrub nurse during surgical procedures. Assists in the setup, break down, cleaning and sterile processing of surgical, endoscopic, or other specialized equipment. Provides all aspects of safe anesthesia, premedication though complete recovery for patients scoring ASA I through ASAIII. Maintains proficiency with injectable and inhalant anesthetic methods. Assists and instructs students with administration of preanesthetic and anesthetic agents, intubation of patient animals and monitoring their physiologic status during anesthesia. Performs aseptic patient preparation for surgical or other invasive procedures. Ensures that all charges generated from treatments, procedures, and supplies are entered in the hospital electronic medical record system correctly and efficiently. Enters all client and patient data into the hospital electronic medical record system and electronic medical chart. Assists with client and referring veterinarian communications. Records all communication with clients and referring veterinarians in the hospital electronic medical record system. Assists with scheduling patient appointments. Assists with the admission and discharge of patients.
* Hospital responsibilities: Provides excellent service to all external and internal clients. Assists with admission and discharge of patients. Assists with scheduling appointments. Helps ensure the hospital portrays a constant image of excellence. Assists in maintaining required feline friendly materials in feline spaces. Assists with hospital tours as needed. Assists with hospital orientations for new student groups or house officers. Assists in various projects that benefit patient wellbeing. Assists in various projects that provide continuing education to peers and students.
* Maintain safe, clean, and sanitary work environment: Maintains sanitary, well-organized service areas and hospital. Restocks supplies and medical inventory as needed. Cleans and repacks surgical instruments and other items for sterilization. Assists in maintaining medical equipment within the Small Animal Hospital
* Required training, compliance, and administrative procedures: Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, radiation safety training, infection control, aseptic technique, and TrainTraq assignments. Maintains certifications or license as appropriate. Maintains good email communication and responds in a timely and appropriate manner. Enters leave entries and worked time in Workday in a timely manner. Assists in capturing data and maintaining a log of daily floater technician assignments within the small animal service areas. Follows all hospital policies and procedures. Assists with hospital accreditations and inspections (AVMA, AAHA, IACUC, IVECCS, AAFP, etc.). Performs other duties as assigned.
