What we want
The Veterinary Technician IV in the Small Animal ICU/PCU provides for and supervises the care and treatment of animals admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital; coordinates the activities and supervises assigned veterinary technical staff; provides assistance to the professional staff, instructs veterinary students and subordinate staff in clinical techniques, and oversees the maintenance of the physical area within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor. May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or on-call duty. Provides quality customer service to internal and external customers/clients.
Required Education and Experience:
* Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or a related area or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Six years of technical experience in a veterinary hospital or clinic environment including one year of supervisory experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
* Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry.
* Working knowledge of equipment used in a veterinary teaching hospital.
* Thorough working knowledge of equipment used within area of specialization, such as blood gas analyzers, shockwave, ultrasound, or endoscopic equipment.
* Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Bachelors' degree in a related field. Specialty training area Small Animal ECC.
* Formal Supervisor training classes.
* Five years of technical experience in area of specialization related to the position.
* Three years of relevant experience within the Texas A&M University System.
* Certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
* Leadership skills such as conflict management.
Responsibilities:
* Supervisory: Conducts performance feedback evaluations and annual performance reviews. Reviews and approves position descriptions. Designs and organizes work schedules for the assigned service areas. Works with Hospital Administration and other supervisors on personnel matters affecting morale and job efficiency. Communicates with clinical staff and Hospital Administration. Reviews and approves all time sheets in WorkDay and approves LeaveTraq requests for any leave taken. Handles employee complaints and grievances and takes appropriate action. Coordinates recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and evaluation of new and current staff. Arranges and provides instruction and training to technical staff on hospital protocols and medical procedures. Assists with coordination and oversight of the Small Animal ICU/PCU Service.
* Administrative Management: Advises the Assistant Hospital Administrator on clinical and management issues within the Small Animal ICU/PCU Service. Coordinates general problem-solving issues between faculty, staff, and students. Communicates with and advises faculty and administrators regarding changes or problems with policies and procedures, fees, patient care, and personnel within the ICU/PCU Service. Plans for future growth and works with senior management to develop service strategies and goals. Coordinates the inventory and ordering of supplies, equipment, and drugs. Coordinates the scheduling of equipment repair and maintenance. Serves on various committees. Ensures compliance with controlled drug policies and procedures. Oversees and provides support to faculty veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of zoonotic disease control. Coordinates, facilitates, and manages the scheduling of service appointments by communicating directly with clients, referring veterinarians, and entering appointment information into an electronic medical records system.
* Patient Care: Monitors medical condition of critical patients admitted to the hospital. Instructs / places peripheral, central, and arterial catheters. Performs urinary catheterization in male and female patients. Monitors patients to detect any change in their clinical status. Calculates and administers drug and constant rate infusion. Provides one-on-one nursing care to critical patients. Provides physical restraint for the safe handling of patients. Performs or assists with the collection of patients' blood, urine, tissues, and submits to appropriate laboratory. Assists and instructs in the performance of diagnostic procedures and examinations. Records all medications administered, fluid types and volumes administered, information regarding urine output, mentation, appetite, and other parameters as needed in electronic medical record system. Records changes in the medical orders, as directed by the clinician. Captures fees and inputs fees into the system. Performs laboratory tests (NOVA, glucose level, VCM, PCV/TS, blood typing, and lactate). Provides life sustaining emergency care. Assists clinicians and students with laboratory sample collection. May assist in other service areas based on patient and staffing needs.
* Teaching and Clinical Research: Facilitates faculty instruction of professional curriculum to veterinary medical students with an emphasis on clinical techniques. Performs, assists, supervises, and instructs veterinary students in patient care, including patient restraint and handling, Initial examination, and collecting patient history. Performs, assists, supervises, and instructs veterinary students, Veterinary Technician I, Veterinary Technician Assistants, and Student Technicians on treatments and observations of patients admitted to the Small Animal Hospital. Provides technical support for clinical research patients.
* General Duties: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Maintains records of expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Maintains accountability for inventory control of capital equipment within the service area. Performs regularly scheduled preventative maintenance checks on hospital capital equipment items. Supervises and performs disease control and sanitation activities. Performs back-up duties as assigned.
