Veterinary Technician
Summary/Purpose of Position: Assist veterinarians and other technician with the health care of the animal collection, laboratory and clinic use, care, maintenance, cleanliness, preparedness, and other duties as instructed by supervisors.
Description of Position: The Essential Responsibilities of the Veterinary Technician in the Animal Health Department will include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
* Perform a multitude of laboratory tests and other medical procedures in-house
* Hematology - basic blood evaluation for assisting in diagnosis of medical conditions
* Chemistry - perform serum chemistries on Idexx Catalyst One Analyzer
* Blood gases - perform blood gases using patient side analyzer
* Parasitology - evaluation of blood and fecal samples for detection of parasite infection
* Anesthesiology - monitoring animals under anesthesia; set up and use of monitoring equipment
* Patient care, including follow-up and administering medications
* Maintenance of clinic/veterinary equipment, including but not limited to:
* Anesthesia equipment
* Taking radiographs, maintenance of imaging equipment, including radiology dosimeter badges and associated recordkeeping; maintenance of blood gas machine, chemistry machine
* General clinic maintenance: cleaning, sanitation and organization
* Sterilization and packing of surgical equipment
* Assisting with endoscopy; ensuring proper cleaning/sterilization
* Receive and dispense specimens and samples for laboratory testing
* Assist with preparing vaccinations and monthly preventative prescriptions
* Provide timely critical lab results for diagnosis and treatment
* ZIMS and spreadsheet recordkeeping updated regularly for monthly preventative medicine treatments and as assigned by veterinarians; prepare paper records, assist in filing and scanning to electronic records
* Assist with the training of the Veterinary Preceptees and Veterinary Technician Interns, as well as Veterinary Fellow
* Regular and dependable attendance required
* Good physical condition is a necessity when working with potentially dangerous wildlife
* Ability to work in unpredictable and sometimes inclement outdoor conditions and in rugged terrain
* Able to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and public holidays
* Good communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
* Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks
* Must be able to stand for at least 2/3 of the day
* Must be able to lift 40 pounds

The Secondary Responsibilities of the Veterinary Technician include but are not necessarily limited to the following:
* Pursue donations of medical supplies and equipment as needed
* Assisting with and participating in fundraising activities and grant writing programs related to animal health management, wildlife conservation research, and other needs related to Animal Health Department.
* Assist as needed in the purchase, storing, maintaining inventory and expiration dating of all pharmaceutical drugs and supplies
Experience and Education Requirements:
* Veterinary Technician Certification from an accredited veterinary technician school
* Associate or B.S degree
* Have or be eligible to obtain a Texas Veterinary Technician License
* At least 2 years of experience, preferably with some wild or exotic animal experience
* Clinical competency in: radiology, anesthesiology, hematology, parasitology, other lab techniques, pharmacology
* Microsoft Excel and Word literate
Work Requirements: Usually a 5-day work week, often requiring flexibility and ability to work weekends and holidays. Irregular scheduling in which days may exceed 8 hours. Work both weekend days in a 5-day per week schedule with two days off in a row. Work holidays (schedule to be determined within department) with consideration given consistent with company leave policy
