Veterinary Technician PT

Location: Animal Services

Work Status: Part Time

THIS POSITION IS OPEN UNTIL FILLED.

SALARY: 17.46 - 21.82 Hourly USD

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, assists the veterinarian both in surgery and with general medical duties, as well as performing dentals, catheterizations, and radiographs. Additionally, maintains anesthesia while monitoring the health of patients during procedures and provides advanced care and treatment to patients.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Monitor the health of patients on an ongoing basis and rapidly identify developing health problems or conditions and immediately report them to the attending veterinarian.

* Maintain patient records by accurately recording exam finding and treatment notes received from veterinarian.

* Provide basic treatment and care for patients including bandaging, nail clipping, ear cleaning, etc.

* Perform injectable and inhalant anesthesia as instructed by veterinarian.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Assist in the provision of high-quality sterilization surgery for adopted animal population control in a fast-paced shelter environment.

* Assist in the provision of routine veterinary care to include triage, physical exams, emergency medical care, stabilization, diagnosis and treatment of ill and injured animals, minor surgery, vaccinations, testing.

* Assist in providing staff training relevant to animal husbandry, humane animal handling, sanitation and disease control, basic animal behavior, medical care, surgical support (intake and discharge) and first aid for animals.

* Receive animal records from staff; input animal record dispositions into computer; prepare monthly and weekly reports according to established guidelines.

* Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in animal sheltering.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

* Knowledge of state, local and federal laws and rules pertaining to animal care and control

* Knowledge of the principles of infectious disease presentation, pathogenesis, diagnosis, management including but not limited to: URI, Kennel cough, Panleukopenia, Parvo, Distemper, Other infectious causes of diarrhea, Ringworm, common internal parasites, common external parasites, FIP, FeLV, FIV, and Rabies.

* Knowledge of how disinfection and quarantine procedures influence the spread and prevention of infectious disease.

* Knowledge of general principles of vaccinations; familiarity with methods of developing and accessing vaccinations; Familiarity with current literature on vaccinations, focusing on vaccinations for common shelter conditions

* Knowledge and principles of herd immunity, role of maternal immunity, and developing vaccinations programs in the face of constant challenge with infectious agents.

* Knowledge of the general principles of animal behavior; familiarity with the methods of treating most common behavior problems of shelter animals; temperament testing/ other behavior assessment techniques; assisting with training programs designed to modify behavior of shelter animals to improve adoptability with emphasis on programs designed to target all shelter animals rather than rehabilitation programs designed for individual animals.

* Skilled in communicating ideas, concepts, and terminology effectively with other staff and the public through oral and written means.

* Skilled in managing multiple tasks.

* Ability to assist in the provision of diagnostic testing for all infectious diseases as it relates to sample collection, site, timing, technique, handling, options, microscopy, serology, molecular diagnostic testing, bacterial and viral culture, and clinical pathology.

* Ability to handle severely frightened or aggressive animals while maintaining the safety for oneself, staff, and customers.

* Ability to keep and prepare accurate records.

* Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to seeing, sorting, typing, writing, euthanasia, dragging, carrying, kneeling and animal restraint,

* Ability to work effectively when surrounded by loud noises.

* Ability to work in an indoor environment; ability to work in an outdoor environment.

* Ability to lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds.

* Incumbent is subject to chemical hazards, dust, odor, zoonotic and mites hazards.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

* High School Diploma or GED.

* Three (3) years of veterinary assistance experience working in a clinic.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred Education and Experience:

* Certification in Veterinary Technology.
