Job Description:
You will play a vital role in our efforts to enhance animal welfare through education and training initiatives. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and delivering clinical veterinary training programs aimed at enhancing the skills and knowledge of veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and other animal welfare professionals. Your work will directly contribute to improving the quality of veterinary care provided to rescued animals.Responsibilities:Curriculum Development: Develop comprehensive training curricula covering various aspects of clinical veterinary medicine, surgery, anesthesia, dentistry, emergency care, and other relevant topics.Training Delivery: Identify and address areas of improvement in veterinarians' training and coordinate training goals with management and department supervisors. Conduct hands-on training sessions, workshops, and seminars for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and animal welfare professionals to enhance their clinical skills and knowledge.Regulatory Standards: Coordinate, plan, develop, facilitate, administrate, assess, implement, and monitor the animal care and clinical education components of the curriculum within established institutional and program policies, regulatory standards and guidelines, and established criteria of the AVMA.Clinical Mentorship: Provide one-on-one mentorship and support to veterinarians and veterinary technicians, to assist them in addressing specific clinical challenges and improving patient care.Health Management: Implement and oversee health management protocols for all animals in the shelter, including vaccination schedules, parasite control, and disease prevention measures.Quality Medicines: Monitor, maintain, and ensure quality control of drugs used within the shelter and in the field. Responsible for communicating with referring veterinarians regarding cases, and with other services.Resource Development: Create educational materials, manuals, videos, and online resources to supplement training programs and support ongoing learning initiatives.Quality Assurance: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of training programs through feedback mechanisms, assessments, and performance evaluations, and make necessary adjustments to ensure continuous improvement.Hygiene: Maintain a clean and safe environment, including proper sterilization of kennels, wards, equipment, and adherence to infection control protocols.Collaboration: Collaborate with internal teams, external partners, and veterinary experts to develop innovative training approaches, share best practices, and promote knowledge exchange within the veterinary community.Advocacy and Outreach: Participate in advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the importance of high-quality veterinary care and promote evidence-based practices in animal welfare.Recruitment Assistance: Aid in the recruitment process, including assessing candidate qualifications, conducting interviews, and providing input on hiring decisions to build a skilled and cohesive veterinary team.Treatment Plan: Develop treatment plans for a variety of medical conditions based on excellent diagnostic abilities and preventive measures.Subject Expertise: Possess strong clinical skills and knowledge across a range of veterinary specialties, including surgery, anesthesia, dentistry, and preventive care.Inventory Management: Oversee inventory management of medical supplies, medications, and equipment, and ensure proper storage and usage.Euthanasia Decisions: Collaborate with management regarding euthanasia decisions for animals suffering from serious illness or severe injury.Tasks Follow-Up: Coordinate with medical staff or subordinates to ensure completion of medical tasks daily.Machine Operations & Maintenance: Perform routine operations and maintenance on medical machinery, equipment, and devices to meet standards.Protocols Preparation and Implementation: Develop and implement written medical treatment protocols to ensure high standards of care for all shelter animals.Set Standards: Develop and execute goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for medical personnel.Perform other related duties as required to support the operation of the animal shelter and the welfare of its residents.Knowledge of:Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office, relevant training tools, and presentation software.Familiarity with typical office protocols, methods, and equipment.Knowledge of safety protocols and adherence to safe working procedures.Competency in mathematical operations, including proportion calculation, percentage determination, volume measurement, ratio assessment, and fraction computation.Skill in maintaining precise record-keeping.Qualifications:Master's degree (preferred) in veterinary medicine from an accredited veterinary school.Board certification or specialized training in veterinary medicine is preferred but not required.Required Background, Experience and Skills:Total of 8+ years of clinical experience in small animal practice, shelter medicine, or a related field.Demonstrated expertise with a minimum of 5+ years of experience in designing and conducting advanced clinical training programs for veterinary professionals, including veterinarians, technicians, and support staff.5+ years of experience in veterinary medicine research and analysis.5+ years of experience in shelter medicine, internal medicine, emergency care, dermatology, dentistry, oncology, general practice, and small animal surgery, including spaying, neutering, soft tissue procedures, orthopedic surgeries, abdominal surgery, oncologic surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and reconstructive procedures.4+ years of strong surgical knowledge, including spay/neuter, orthopedic, soft tissue procedures, etc.In-depth knowledge and practical experience (4+ years) in advanced diagnostic imaging modalities such as MRI, CT, and ultrasound, and their application in veterinary clinical settings.Experience with curriculum development, presenting, or teaching in lecture or workshop settings.Previous teaching experience in veterinary medicine.Ensure compliance with relevant regulations (AWBI, state and municipal animal health laws), standards of care, and veterinary medical ethics in all aspects of shelter operations and animal care.Commitment to continuing education and professional development to stay current with advancements in veterinary medicine, surgery, etc.Strong knowledge of animal anatomy, physiology, behavior, etc.Proficiency in managing animals, encompassing the handling of aggressive or feral ones, with safety, correctness, and compassion.The role of a Veterinary Trainer is essential in ensuring the well-being of animals through comprehensive training programs and clinical care.
