Job Description:

Reporting to and working closely with the President and other Vice Presidents, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement will be responsible for the vision, leadership, and direction for all initiatives aimed at enhancing the College's development and philanthropic efforts, including corporate and foundation giving, and will lead the College in a comprehensive fundraising campaign. The Vice President serves as Executive Director of the SUNY Maritime Foundation, Inc., and is an ex-officio member of the Maritime College Alumni Association.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMPETENCIES:

  • With the SUNY Maritime Foundation Board and College President, plan and launch the College's first comprehensive fundraising campaign
  • Analyze and evaluate current fundraising efforts and develop strategies to dramatically increase fundraising results and the level of alumni participation
  • Lead, inspire and mentor the fundraising team to build a dynamic and growing fundraising program that includes a strong focus on major gifts, planned giving, bequests, and annual giving
  • Develop and maintain strong advancement systems including annual giving campaigns, leadership gift society solicitations and engagement, a database shared with the independent Alumni Association, and stewardship reporting activities
  • Develop volunteer engagement pathways to engage leadership donors and candidates for Board positions in the work of the Foundation and in support of the College
  • Serve as the College's liaison to the Maritime College Alumni Association
  • Develop strong relationships with industry partners and collaborate on ways to develop long-term giving plans
  • Develop a long-term strategic plan for the Capital Campaign involving all stakeholders. Be able to evaluate progress through a step-by-step plan
  • Advocate for the College, understanding its rich history and mission-driven education programs, and be able to communicate this to all stakeholders and outside entities
  • Maintain effective lines of communication across SUNY and College executives and administrators, College Council, legislators (municipal, State, and Congressional), State, Federal and private agencies, faculty, staff, students, and alumni
  • Respond on behalf of the College President both orally and in writing; modify, develop, and administer policies and develop concepts related to Institutional Advancement
  • Represent the College at industry events and build strong connections to corporate and foundation leaders, alumni, and friends of the College
  • Work with the President, members of the Executive Cabinet, deans, department heads, and internal cross-functional teams and external volunteer groups to plan and implement fundraising programs, initiatives, and strategies
  • Support the President in advancement activities, managing engagement of prospects for major College priorities, providing research, and conferring on strategies
  • Assume other duties, responsibilities, and relationships as assigned by the President

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Baccalaureate degree
  • 10 to 15 years of demonstrated leadership and management skills
  • Senior-level experience in a university setting
  • Experience in managing fundraising campaigns (including the planning and implementation)
  • Demonstrated strong financial and communication skills
  • Exceptional public relations talent
  • Strong abilities in strategic planning
  • Working knowledge of budgeting practices and principles
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated expertise in motivating others to establish and successfully achieve goals
  • Capacity to work effectively with volunteer leaders and organizations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree
  • Fundraising and/or marketing experience - equivalent years of demonstrated leadership development, business administration, judicial, or other high-level management experience may be substituted

Additional Information:

Classification/Salary Range: The Vice President for Institutional Advancement is a full-time calendar year appointment Management/Confidential Unclassified position which serves at the President's pleasure. The anticipated salary range for the position is $150,000.00t o $180,000.00 annually with an outstanding benefits package (for additional information, please see the M/C Unclassified Benefits Summary. Salary will commensurate with qualifications and experience. Review of applications to commence immediately and conclude when the position is filled.

Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year appointment. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Professional obligations require this position to work outside regular working hours and weekdays.
