MSU-WARC is one of seven agricultural research centers in Montana. Located in the Bitterroot valley, WARC's mission is to serve Montana fruit and vegetable growers by seeking more profitable crops and methods to produce, process, and market these crops. The Montana Grape and Wine Association was incorporated in 2014 to promote viticulture (grape growing) and enology (wine making) in the state. The MTGWA serves commercial and amateur fruit and grape growers and winemakers across Montana.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist MTGWA Board President and Vice Pres. in preparing for and holding board meetings (monthly to quarterly, depending on time of year).
Assist MTGWA Treasurer with tracking finances. Manage, track, and report grant expenditures.
Organize viticulture and enology workshops and other outreach events for grape growers and wine makers. Specifically, arranging location, speakers, and activities; promoting events and managing registration, handing logistics during the events. Primary annual duty will be to assist with the planning, promoting, and holding of the MTGWA annual conference (a 2-to-3-day conference held in winter/spring).
Developing and communicating member resources through a variety of media, social media, MTGWA website, quarterly newsletters, etc.
Assist MTGWA Board President/VP with the planning, promoting, and holding of Montana wine marketing events (3 to 4 events per year) and developing marketing/outreach materials for consumers/wine retailers.
Assist MTGWA Board President/VP with increasing recruitment/retention of MTGWA members.
Track and report on the state of Montana Vineyards and Wineries. Gather and record information on the location, size, needs, and production of MT vineyards, wineries, and project impacts. Deliver, summarize, and report on surveys designed to track grape and wine industry and marketing efforts. Surveys will be delivered by the Outreach manager/coordinator at outreach/marketing events for measure gain in knowledge from various stakeholders groups (fruit growers, wine makers and for marketing efforts, consumers, distributors, wine sellers) through attendance and surveys.
They will also be responsible for grant reporting on the marketing/member objectives (Obj 3 & 4 in the SCBG proposal) and assisting and Board of Directors with writing and submitting new grant applications.
Required Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Bachelor's degree in business/ farm management, education, or marketing OR work experience (>1 year) with relevant positions (e.g. nonprofit organizations, marketing, wine/beverage industry).
Experience in outreach/education/extension and event planning.
Experience with organizational computing (e.g. Google or Microsoft Suites) and ability to learn how to use new programs to create documents, websites, databases.
Become a member of MTGWA within 2 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Proficient with organizational computing software (e.g. Google or Microsoft Suites).
Experience maintaining and updating websites through the WordPress platform and social media accounts including Facebook and Instagram.
Expertise with event planning and execution. They must also be able to work closely with the Board of Directors to develop and implement new programs for MTGWA members, such as facilitating outreach workshops and materials.
Experience in strategic planning, board governance, and grant management.
Experience in growing grapes (or horticultural production) and wine making.
The Successful Candidate Will
Must also be a self-starter and able to efficiently work from home, accomplishing a variety of tasks and meeting all deadlines with minimal supervision.
Interpersonal/communication skills to engage with various collaborators, consumers, and agricultural producers in person and in writing.
Technical Proficiency in software programs and technologies to engage with stakeholders online, in social media, and at workshops.
This individual must be able to work independently.
Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
Continued employment is contingent upon funding availability.
In accordance with MSU policy, hiring will be conditional upon successful completion of pre-employment background check.
Some travel and work outside of regular business hours is required, including some evenings and weekends.
Must possess a valid driver's license, an acceptable driving record, and meet all State of Montana requirements to operate State/University vehicles. (If successful candidate possesses a valid out-of-state driver's license, must obtain a valid Montana driver's license within 60 days of hire.) Do NOT send a copy of the driver's license.
