Job Duties

The Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament Supervisor administers the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament Program to develop and promote Virginia's saltwater angling resources to enhance their economic and recreational benefits for the State. Additionally, this position provides administrative support to the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program in cooperation with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* To develop rules and guidance in cooperation with the Virginia Saltwater Tournament Committee, regulations in cooperation with the Marine Resources Commission and prepare tournament literature, correspondence and awards.

* To assist and instruct weigh-stations and associate personnel, to include visitations to weight-stations and overseeing scale maintenance and annual testing.

* Oversee production and delivery of program awards; review and manage all submittals, including investigation of suspicious, erroneous entries.

* Develop and maintain state record program for Virginia's Marine game fish, including investigating, certifying and publicizing record achievements.

* Administer public liaison aspects of the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program in cooperation with VIMS. Complete data entry and correspondence related to tagging and recapture events, overseeing the distribution of and records of issuance for all tagging equipment. Oversee and fulfill design, production, and distribution of awards to top taggers and anglers recapturing tagged fish.

Minimum Qualifications

Good knowledge working in databases. Ability to work independently. Demonstrated skills in oral and written communications, including a strong aptitude to communicate and work with peers, the fishing industry and the general public. Considerable ability to speak effectively at public meetings and to write technical and non-technical correspondence and reports. Extensive knowledge of the fish species and recreational fisheries of Virginia and the Atlantic Coast. Must be willing to travel and work a flexible schedule including occasional weekends and evenings.

Additional Considerations

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

* Experience in coordinating large-scale public events related to recreational fisheries. Graduation from an accredited college or university, with course work in public relations or a related field preferred.

* Degree in Marine Science, Fisheries Management, Biology, Statistical Analysis or closely related field or equivalent experience in lieu of education preferred.
