Salary : $33,737.60 - $55,681.60 Annually Location : City of Statesville, NC Job Type: Full-Time Job Number: 202400121 Department: Public Works Division: Sanitation Opening Date: 11/13/2024 Closing Date: Continuous SummaryWaste Collector - Sanitation (FT) Public Works Department Salary Range: $16.22 - $26.77 Hourly, $33,737.60 - $55,681.60 Annually FLSA Position Class: Non-Exempt Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Closing Date: Until Filled Job Overview Responsible for manual work in the collection of garbage, trash, and yard waste. Essential Duties and Responsibilities NOTE: Employee may be required to respond to a disaster, either natural or man-made, to serve the citizens of Statesville. Service to the citizens during a disaster may result in the assignment of other duties, which will take precedence over duties described in this job description. This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as needed to meet the needs of the organization.
  • Collects garbage and refuse on a designated route; empties refuse containers in packer truck; operates packer mechanism.
  • Cleans area around trucks and along roadsides upon completion of collecting debris.
  • Collects furniture, appliances, and other items from the curbside; lifts heavy materials into the bed of the truck.
  • Inspects refuse containers for damage; informs supervisor of substandard containers.
  • Washes and cleans sanitation trucks; maintains sanitation equipment.
  • Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas.
  • Picks up litter, debris, limbs, leaves, and other refuse from curbside.
  • Delivers collection toters and recycling containers.
  • Follows established routes and schedules to ensure efficient trash collection.
  • Assists with other sanitation or public works crews as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum RequirementsMinimum Education and/or Experience
  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards of working in traffic and with garbage and refuse.
  • Some knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace and under various and hostile weather conditions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to citizens.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.
  • Ability to complete simple records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, other departments, supervisors, and the general public.
Job Related Physical Activity Requirements This position involves heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may require the use of fingers and hands, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for operation of machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Working Conditions The employee is subject to outdoor environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, gases, oils, and hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts. Employees may be required to wear a respirator during the leaf collection season and could be reasonably anticipated, in performing his or her job duties, to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials. In addition, the work will require seasonal exposure to extreme weather conditions, snakes, insects, and wildlife.
