Position Summary: While training, Trainee, under supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Operator, performs necessary duties in the waste treatment area to maintain constant level of wastewater in tanks and ponds to prevent overflowing. Also, records wastewater flow readings and adjust as necessary, monitor's aeration basin to maintain effluent quality within discharge criteria. Additionally collects, analyses, and records wastewater samples. Operator monitors the plant site in relation to compliance to state and federal water and air discharge requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
* Reads and records wastewater flows from topside area of plant to aeration basin #2 to maintain constant level of wastewater to prevent overflowing
* Checks flow meter or bucket-checks ammonia equalization tank flow to maintain specified set-point depending on level and chemical concentration
* Collects and analyzes wastewater samples to test for concentration levels of chemicals in system
* Checks decanting digesters to determine necessity of removing excess water from sludge
* Pumps sludge from #1 to #2 digester, then to sludge press to dispose of excess sludge
* Visually checks outfall flow and records flow according to state requirements.
* Wasting is performed on clarifier to control suspended solids and the MLVSS.
* Visually checks the level of scum pit at clarifier. When full, operates pumps at scum pit to aeration basin #1
* Pulls and analyzes samples from aeration basins
* Visually checks skimmer for organic phase at amines skimmer tank
* Excess organic phase is drained to old caustic tank then fed to aeration basins #2 when TKN in aeration basin #2 is low
* Orders and unloads 20% caustic when needed to maintain pH in aeration basin #1
* Responsible for housekeeping within the wastewater plant control room, pond areas, wastewater laboratory, and drum storage areas
* Complies with all U. S. Amines policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
* Completes necessary checks of safety equipment including fire extinguishers, respirators, AirPaks, safety showers/eyewash stations.
* Performs or reports necessary repairs
* Reads and documents electrical meter reading for all areas plus records sub-station reading once per month
* Checks and treats the potable water systems daily
* Adjusts concentration levels of chlorine and caustic according to lab results and interpretation.
* Collects and sends drinking water samples to ADEM for testing
* Samples monitoring wells as required
* Operates forklift to move 55-gallon drums and tote bins as necessary to aid or replace empty containers
* Collects and analyzes samples from Lake Pierre
* Maintains a check on local instrumentation to insure that all remote instrumentation is functioning properly
* Repairs or arranges for repair of any equipment deficiencies
* Makes equipment ready for maintenance to perform work and checks out work when completed
* Records pertinent information in waste treatment control logbook for record keeping and communication purposes
* Reads logbook at start of each shift
* Unloads/loads raw materials and finished goods as required
* Washes out and disposes of empty 55-gallon drums and helps keep drum storage area in order
* Works with the EHSA department on pulling storm water run-off samples
* Performs all required inspections of equipment
* Maintains areas in clean and safe manner properly disposing of all containers
* Member of the Bucks Emergency Services Team
* Assists with and performs maintenance activities as needed
* Performs such other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
* Associate degree in a relevant technology, or 2 years of college, or 3 years' relevant industrial experience in Wastewater Treatment operations
* Ability to read, write and perform simple math operations
* Certifiable to operate a forklift
* This position requires shift work, overtime, weekend, and Holiday work assignments

* The ability to lift 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects
* The ability to climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like
* The ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, talk, hear and have good vision
* The ability to efficiently operate computers and ancillary equipment
* The ability to competently read, write, and speak the English language
* The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
* The ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
* The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written and oral instructions
* The ability to effectively deal with problems involving multiple variables
* The ability to work in a self-directed organization
* The ability to organize and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
* The ability to work outside in environmental conditions which, at times include extreme heat or extreme cold
* The ability to meet medical standards for Personal Protective Equipment, Powered Industrial Equipment operation and Industrial Fire Brigade participation
