SIGN-ON BONUS - New Crew Members hired on or after January 1, 2024, are eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus to be paid in two increments. Employee will receive $500 after successful completion of their six (6) month introductory period. The employee must be employed when the incentive is paid, and it will be paid on the first pay date following the pay period in which it was earned. Employee will receive $500 after successful completion of their one (1) year of employment. Employee must be employed when bonus is paid, and it will be paid on the first pay date following the pay period in which it was earned.

Johnson County Wastewater (JCW) is responsible for the safe collection, transportation and treatment of wastewater generated by our community. Our work ensures that our lakes, rivers, and streams remain free from disease-causing pathogens and pollutants that are harmful to public health and the environment. Johnson County Wastewater is looking for qualified candidates to fill the position of Maintenance Specialist. This position works in a team environment to support the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility as well as the off-site pump stations. They will also support the electrical maintenance and install needs at other locations as needed.

Crew Member I/Operator I - Job Grade 13 - Salary Range: $20.60 to $27.87, will vary based on relevant years of experience.

  • Inspects and documents plant and pump station processes to ensure proper operations and detect common equipment failures by reading and interpreting information provided by the SCADA system, visual observations of tanks and tests, and other instrumentation; monitors telemetry equipment to identify alarms during heavy rain events and emergency operations; carries on-call duty phone or pager to respond to alarms and other needs during off hours; works weekend shifts either independently for more routine operation functions or with other crew members when more advanced operations or maintenance functions are needed.
  • Performs specific laboratory analysis for compliance by collecting samples and using standard methods and techniques; performs microscopic examination of samples for types and quantities of micro-organisms.
  • Under direct supervision, assists in performing preventative and general maintenance on assigned equipment by adjusting and troubleshooting a variety of complex pumps, valves, motors and other equipment required to maintain appropriate operations; assists with the repair or replacement of a variety of piping and other infrastructure or equipment.
  • Maintains and updates operational and maintenance records, logs and databases; performs and records routine mathematical calculations related to plant operational activities.
  • Works with the public and other customers by assisting haulers/tankers, delivery drivers, and vendors/contractors; responds to routine questions and complaints from the general public and escalates more complex requests, questions, or concerns.

Crew Member II/Operator II - Job Grade 14 - Salary Range $22.73 to $30.75, will vary based on relevant years of experience.

  • May be required to serve as back-up to Truck Drivers or others in the Operations and Maintenance division as needed and assigned. Those designated to serve in this role are required to have a Commercial Drivers License with tanker endorsement, provide authorization for the Clearinghouse, and complete required drug and alcohol testing and training.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Crew Member I /Operator I:

High school diploma or equivalent; one year of experience in a mechanical, maintenance, or vocational trade such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or a science field in the areas of biology, microbiology, or chemistry; a drivers license; and an acceptable driving record are required.

Crew Member II/Operator II:

High school diploma or equivalent; three (3) years of experience in a mechanical, maintenance, or vocational trade such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or a science field in the areas of biology, microbiology, or chemistry; a drivers license; and an acceptable driving record are required.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.

Preferred Job Requirements:

Vo-Tech training or certification in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or other relevant field; Associates degree in Chemistry, Biology, Math, or other relevant field; and one year of experience in a mechanical, maintenance, or vocational trade in a water or wastewater field are preferred.
