About us:
The Water and Sewer Pipe Maintenance division is located at 1103 Mebane Street in Burlington. The Water & Sewer Pipe Maintenance division was established in 1907 to maintain the city water system. The system presently serves approximately 30,000 Water and Sewer accounts through a distribution system containing over 2,500,000 feet of pipe and a collection system which has over 2,000,000 feet of pipe.
What you will do:
An employee in this class performs routine manual work in providing safe and attractive structures, facilities, and grounds for use by City workers and staff.
Examples of Duties
* Checks operation of water valves by manually turning valves on and off with valve key or wrench
* Reports needed valve replacements to immediate supervisor.
* Digs, patches, and backfills pavement or grounds using shovels, dump trucks, jackhammers, and tamps.
* Assists with repair of water and wastewater main breaks; digs pavement, cuts, or clamps pipes, and backfills.
* Provides general maintenance to City's water and sewer infrastructure consisting of repairing, replacing, and renewing both water and sewer lines.
* Drives dump trucks to and from worksite hauling debris, mud, and materials used for backfilling.
* Performs general landscaping work including mowing with riding and push mowers, trims, and prunes trees and shrubs, spraying weed killer, and cuts down trees.
* Drives a City truck, loading and unloading crew supplies, directing traffic, and other labor-intensive tasks.
* Shovels snow from sidewalks and spreads ice melting materials
* Performs general vehicle, building, and equipment maintenance.
* Performs related duties as required.
Qualifications
* General knowledge of general maintenance workperformed by municipality.
* General knowledge of equipment, facilities, methods, and procedures used in maintenance and repair activities.
* Demonstrated ability to operate mower, tractor, dump truck, leaf blower, weed eater, chainsaw, tamp, jackhammer, and other maintenance equipment.
Minimum Requirements
* High school Diploma or GED equivalency
* Basic knowledge and experience using hand tools.
* Valid North Carolina Driver's License
