Water Distribution Operator I: Under direct supervision of the department's designated supervisor, performs heavy physical labor in cleaning, maintaining, and performing routine maintenance, installation, and/or repairs at assigned sites and facilities. - Measures, cuts, joins and taps steel, casts iron, removes asbestos, cements, copper and plastic water pipe.
- Installs meter boxes, vaults and residential, industrial, commercial, and hydrant meters.
- Repairs rings and lids.
- Replaces or repairs meters.
- Turns water service on and off for repair work and notifies customers.
- Installs or repairs water production and transmission facilities and equipment.
- Pumps flooded areas.
- Performs weed abatement work and applies pesticides.
- Replaces and repairs concrete and asphalt after repairs are completed.
- Performs concrete work.
- Operates various motor vehicles.
- Performs routine vehicle and equipment maintenance, and makes vehicle and equipment safety checks.
- Operates and maintains a variety of hand operated and powered mechanical equipment used in street, landscaping, and general maintenance activities.
- Washes and cleans assigned vehicles.
- Assists other divisions in maintenance work, or serves as temporary relief for other division employees.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned.
Water Distribution Operator I:
- Assists in installing, cleaning, maintaining, repairing and replacing underground water distribution systems, including mains, services, valves, meters, hydrants, pressure regulators, and related equipment and facilities.
- Repairs leaks and line breaks.
Minimum QualificationsThe requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities.Knowledge of:
- Principles and practices of PC's and related software.
- Equipment, tools, materials, installation, maintenance and repair methods used in the underground water distribution systems.
- Job safe practices and safety precautions related to these fields.
- Proper handling of pesticides and chemicals.
- Sanitation practices as applied to water distribution systems.
- Operation and maintenance of a variety of power equipment and hand tools used in assigned work.
- Relevant codes and regulations.
Skilled in:
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Communicating with the public and employees.
- Operating and maintaining specialized tools and equipment, and driving trucks.
Water Distribution Operator I:
- Performing general maintenance, basic equipment maintenance and repair work in a variety of craft areas, basic repair of underground utilities, and heavy labor assistance.
- Reading various utility meters.
- Communicating with the public and employees.
Ability to:
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Operate a PC and related software.
- Maintain effective working relationships with other people.
- Adhere to safety practices and regulations, and protect the safety of employees and the public.
- Carry out assignments in a non-disruptive manner in areas receiving heavy public use.
- Operate various motor vehicles and power equipment, perform routine maintenance, and make safety checks.
Education and/or ExperienceAny combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the requisite knowledge, skill and abilities. A typical way to obtain these would be:
- High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.
- Must be able to respond to emergency situations during off-hours.
- Failure to acquire or maintain required certificates within the time provided will lead to termination of employment at the end of the appropriate period below.
Water Distribution Operator I:
- One (1) to two (2) years of experience in general maintenance and/or related work.
- Possess a Grade 1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate.
- Maintain a valid Class C California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
