Nature of Work: This is skilled work in the operation of wastewater treatment plant equipment on an assigned shift. Work involves responsibility for the operation, routine servicing, and care of a variety of plant equipment. Operation of the equipment includes reading meters and gauges, recording measurements, operating pumps, and maintaining chemical mixes. Work is reviewed by the assigned supervisor through inspection, tests, and observation of plant effectiveness.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.

High school graduation or its equivalent AND Experience in the operation and minor maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment.

Special Qualifications: Must possess and maintain a class 'O drivers license. Must maintain a Wastewater Treatment Plant Certificate, Class II, in accordance with Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality Wastewater Certification Act.

Pay Range: $22.06 with step increases to $30.69 Hourly

Examination Information: The examination will consist of a structured interview which will be scheduled at a later date. The structured interview is designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. The final eligibility list will be assembled from those candidates achieving a passing score of 60% on the structured interview (100% weight).

Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by October 23, 2024.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Knowledge of and ability to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks

* Knowledge of functions and servicing requirements for wastewater treatment equipment

* Knowledge of the processes involved in the treatment and disposal of wastewater

* Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance of pumping equipment

* Ability to learn occupational hazards and safety precautions

* Ability to use audio and visual means in order to monitor equipment for efficient operation

* Ability to accurately measure gauges and record readings

* Ability to use basic hand tools such as wrenches and hammers

* Ability to inspect operating mechanical and electrical equipment to detect flaws and defects in operation

* Ability to perform mathematical computations to include addition, multiplication, division, and subtraction

* Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software

* Ability to understand oral and written instructions

* Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public

Essential Functions: Any one position may not perform all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all of the duties that may be performed in positions allocated to this class.

* Operates and monitors wastewater treatment plant equipment using pre-determined procedures

* Reads meters and gauges in order to measure flow, functions, temperatures, pressures, and chemical levels, records measurements on shift logs and charts, and may also replace flow meter charts

* Collects samples for laboratory testing and analysis following pre-determined procedures

* Adjusts chemical and water mix, sludge filtrations systems, and pumps as necessary

* Operates sewage and sludge pumps, skims primary tanks, transfers grease to holding tanks, washes tanks, and draws sludge

* Operates power generating equipment and compressors for the storage of gases and recovery of energy

* Performs routine cleaning and servicing of equipment to include lubricating equipment, checking bearings and pumps, closing gate valves, removing rags and grit from pumps, refilling and replacing chemical containers, and draining condensation

* Performs air readings with gas detectors to determine if equipment is functioning properly and to identify potentially hazardous conditions

* Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor

* Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification
