Grade Job Class Work Comp EEO Class/Code Tier Status B76-5 Non-Supervisory 7520 7/Skilled Craft 1 NATURE OF JOB: This is technical work involved in all aspects of the operation and maintenance of a surface water treatment plant. The employee works under the general direction and supervision of both the Lead and the Chief Water Plant Operator. The employee typically works shifts in combination with other Water Treatment Plant Operators but may be assigned to work certain shifts alone. Monitors the water treatment facility's performance to insure effective treatment and pumping of the community's water supply. Adjusts the treatment process or pumping, as required, to effectively treat and deliver potable water in compliance with all rules, regulations and the facility's standard operating procedures. Maintains accurate and comprehensive operation and maintenance records. Performs minor maintenance tasks and assists the maintenance staff, as necessary, with major or unusual maintenance tasks. Monitors computer telemetry to alert other County staff to problems with lift stations or lagoon aeration. Collects samples and performs routine physical and chemical analyses on water. Performs other related duties as assigned. Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Possession of a valid Class C Water Treatment Plant Operators certification issued by the State of Florida (FAC 62-602). A minimum of one (1) year experience in the operation of a potable water treatment plant(s). Must be able to comprehend, speak and read the English language. Must have and maintain good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with the public. A comparable amount of training and/or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications except for the required certification. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS: Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program. Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of potable water treatment equipment and the processes involved in the treatment and pumping of water. Knowledge of basic physical and chemical analyses for potable water quality analysis. Skilled in the use of basic mechanical repair tools and procedures. Must have good interpersonal and communication skills to deal with public. Outstanding project management and organizational skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work weekends and holidays, be on call and respond to calls during non-scheduled work hours. Ability to learn and implement proper operation and maintenance procedures for potable water treatment systems in order to meet or exceed permit requirements and standard operating procedures. Ability to learn and understand the function and mechanics of pumps, valves, compressors, motors and other plant equipment. Ability to learn to monitor the operation of mechanical and electrical equipment in the treatment process, detect flaws and repair same. Ability to read meters and charts accurately, to maintain comprehensive records of operation and maintenance tasks, and to perform required physical and chemical analysis accurately. Ability to read and comprehend technical information related to the job and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work is primarily performed outdoors in varying and adverse weather; work in water, brush and ditches. Work requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust). This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations. Stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pulling, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Ability to frequently lift and carry equipment 25-50lbs. and on occasion up to 100 pounds; manual dexterity and mobility; intermittent exertion when performing duties.
