The City of Schertz Public Works Department provides quality services to the Schertz community in a number of areas, including street maintenance, solid waste, water/wastewater, drainage and storm water management, to ensure Schertz is kept safe, clean, livable and enjoyable. The Water / Wastewater division serves over 13,000 customers in homes, businesses, and schools. Water / Wastewater is responsible for operation and maintenance of 211 miles of water mains and 98 miles of sanitary sewer lines. You are invited to join a team that is dedicated to leading, improving and serving a livable, sustainable and financially sound community!POSITION SUMMARY: This work involves the construction, installation, maintenance, operation and repair of water distribution systems and sewer collection systems. Has limited responsibility for the preparation of reports and records; has daily contact with the public requiring tact and diplomacy; makes numerous work decisions weekly; varying in complexity; has limited supervisory assignments; reports Water/Wastewater crew activity daily.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Participates, either by himself or with a crew engaged in the construction, reconstruction, maintenance repairs and purification of city water distribution system, sewer collection system, and the sanitation of well sites and lift stations. Performs vehicle and equipment-scheduled inspections and maintenance. Operates all vehicles, construction equipment, grounds maintenance equipment, chemical application equipment, pumps, shop support equipment, sewer cleaning equipment, powered and non-powered tools. Maintains vegetation control and good housekeeping tactics at lift stations, water well sites and storage facilities. Familiarization with street construction and repairs. Record man-hour expenditures and material on work orders. Record vehicle and equipment maintenance actions on proper forms. Operation, records and maintenance on sewage lift stations. Performs painting, carpentry, concrete, plumbing, and minor electrical work. Performs minor maintenance on vehicles, lawn mowers, pumps and small motors Records and inspects as scheduled pumps, CL2 systems, altitude valves, lift stations, and water storage facilities. Knowledge of SCADA system. Assist with meter reading when required, rebuilds, repairs, and performs maintenance on fire hydrants, pumps, valves, altitude valves and blow off assemblies. Familiarization with City of Schertz Code of Ordinance, subdivision codes, water & wastewater standards and specification codes, TCEQ Rules and Regulations and A.W.W.A. standards. Coordinates On the Job Training and City Safety Programs. Maintains inventories related to division equipment and supplies. Coordinates the location of telephone cables, cable TV lines, electric and gas mains prior to construction or repairs of the water/wastewater system. Assumes the duties of supervisor in their absence. On call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Good Housekeeping and organization of tools, equipment, vehicles and work area. Assures crews are organized and ready to complete task at hand. Performs other job-related duties as required.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: High School Diploma or GED equivalent One (1) year prior experience in water distribution system and sewer collection, maintenance and repair work.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Requires an above average knowledge of procedures and materials, equipment operations and maintenance of Pick-up truck, dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, backhoe, sewer cleaner, other construction equipment, shop support equipment and other related power tools. Construction related materials.CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Must have a Class C Water Operator or a Class D with two years' experience & a Class II Wastewater Collection Operator Certificate of Competency from TCEQ or be able to obtain both within twelve (12) months of hire and a valid class B Texas Commercial Driver's License or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of appointment to this position.To view the full Job Description, click the attachment.The salary range listed is based on qualifications and level of experience.Job Post Closing Date: Open Until Filled
