Job Description:
Basic FunctionUnder the direction and supervision of the Department Production Superintendent and in cooperation with the Foreman and Bay Coordinator, weld metal components with welding equipment to fit and join, fabricate, and/or repair heavy and large mechanical products per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule.Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform welding duties using wire welding GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding). Select appropriate welding processes for the work involved and regulate gas, current and voltage for proper penetration and fusion of metals. Must be able to pass Astec welding test.
  • Weld steel components with welding equipment as specified by procedures, layouts, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions. Welds range from simple tacks to complex welds, performed in varying positions.
  • Operate and/or use related equipment and tools which include forklift, overhead cranes, jib hoists, slings, grinders (portable and bench), cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, a tape measure and Air Arc.
  • Read, understand, and follow job order specifications, blueprints, work instructions and procedures.
  • Maintain level of work performance in accordance with Astec standards and/or job order specifications.
  • Participate in process and product development and improvement programs, teams and focus groups.
  • Use a computer to access ERP/MES system (clocking in/out of jobs) and other computer documents.
  • Maintain and use all appropriate PPE
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Actively participate in Astec's safety program. Participate in accident prevention.
  • Perform or assist in other assigned duties as qualified.

  • Perform work standing on concrete a minimum of 8 hours and up to 12 hours per day, and a minimum of 4 days up to 6 days per week.
  • Flexibility to work additional hours beyond the work schedule when needed.
  • Willingness to cross-train and perform the work of other job tasks or positions in the Company outside of or in addition to primarily-assigned position, work area, or department.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Perform work safely in accordance with all Company safety policies, procedures, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Perform work in various physical positions including standing, kneeling, squatting, bending, and reaching (temporary variances may be accommodated based on employee's primary assignment).
  • Perform work in heavy industrial setting with exposure to heat, cold, and humidity, industrial odors, fumes, gasses, chemicals, oil, grease, smoke, dust, noise, and vibration, and involves climbing ladders and stairs, using pneumatic tools, working in cramped quarters, and working with moving machinery.
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for this position, including hearing protection, safety glasses, safety steel toe boots, face shield, welding helmet, welding gloves, work gloves, and welding sleeves/jacket (leather or cloth). A hard hat and respirator may also be required.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools and devices, including a welding gun.
  • Ability to read and comprehend a tape measure. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to understand welding symbols and diagrams, read blueprints, and/or other printed instructional material in the welding of products or parts.
  • Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Welding experience required
  • Heavy equipment manufacturing experience preferred
  • Computer experience desired, particularly the ability to use a mouse and locate and open/close programs/files.
