We are currently offering a $1,500 sign-on bonus for this position, payable after 90-days of employment. Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring a Welder in Salem, Virginia at our corporate headquarters. The Welder is responsible for assisting with fabricating new components and welding, fabricating, retrofitting, and repairing metals and other weldable materials by applying appropriate welding techniques. General welding and fabrication using gas, stick, MIG and TIG welding. Seeking candidates with a high school diploma or GED required. Minimum one year experience welding and fabricating on heavy equipment with portable machines. Experience using precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.), preferred. Requirements for the Welder position include:
- Required skills include welding, boring, fabricating, designing, salvaging and building-up equipment and/or components. General welding and fabrication using gas, stick, MIG and TIG welding. Ability to learn how to use precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, etc.) is required.
- Self-starter able to work with limited supervision.
- Must be able to operate, drive and maneuver construction equipment to perform needed repairs.
- Certificate of technical training and/or knowledge in welding and machinery
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Must be able to work in a fast paced environment.
- Excellent organizational and analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong mechanical and design abilities; must be able to apply knowledge of parts, components and equipment.
- Proficient computer and mathematical skills
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record required.
- Must be able to work additional hours as needed to meet business and customer demands.
- Must be able to positively interact with supervisor and to understand problems and concerns relating to a repair.
- Must be able to perform job in sometimes stressful situations due to circumstances.

Physical requirements must be met for the Welder job, including the ability to lift, carry and maneuver items up to 70 pounds, including bulky objects. This position requires repeated reaching, standing, stooping, kneeling, bending and climbing beside, onto and under a variety of heavy equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
