DescriptionMaintains and monitors the Fitness and Wellness area of the facility to prevent accidents and assists exercisers.WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
- Recognize members and their names.
- Could be exposed to varied temperatures, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, and electrical machines.
- Ability to operate audio equipment
- Ability to lift and move 100 lbs.
- Ability to step, stand, sit, push, pull, stretch, lift and squat
- Ability to solve practical problems
QUALIFICATIONS
- CPR, First Aid certified.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assists members on the proper use of exercise equipment.
- Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled.
- Offers and provides spotting to members.
- Provides general maintenance to exercise area equipment and keeps records of those repairs.
- Provides a safe, clean area for members to exercise.
- Answers general fitness questions for members and directs concerns to the appropriate staff member.
- Maintains current CPR and First Aid certifications.
- Stay current with the latest safety information and research in the fitness industry.
- Notifies supervisor of any damaged equipment or shortages.
- Wears appropriate staff uniform and footwear.
- Arrive 5 minutes before your shift.
- Motivates and encourages participants with positive feedback.
- Executes Branch emergency action plan as necessary.
- Organizes and maintains all equipment.
- Other duties as assigned.
RequirementsACCOUNTABILITYThe wellness coach will communicate and enforce all etiquette rules and policies of the YMCA to individuals using the facility, keeping within the framework of the YMCA of Roanoke Valley's purpose, policies and goals. Report to the Wellness Director/Coordinator.KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- A degree in wellness or related field is preferred.
- Obtain YMCA Principles of Health and Fitness and/or YMCA Personal Trainer Certification within 6 months of employment.
- Must hold and maintain:
- Current CPR certification
- Current AED certification
- Must hold or successfully complete within 90 days of employment the YMCA of the USA in Foundations of Strength & Conditioning (or presently hold a comparable certification or Exercise Science degree as approved by the Wellness Director/Coordinator).
- Must have completed or successfully complete within 90 days of employment the YMCA Healthy Lifestyles Principles course.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSMust be able to recognize and respond to unsafe situations. Demonstrate and assist with exercises. May be required to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; stand and walk for long periods of time.PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONSAs we continue to progress in our quest for excellent customer/member service and relationship building, the focus on staff performance is critical. A significant part of all job performance will be related to the specific behavior that staff are to exhibit on a daily basis. These indices will be included in all performance feedback and merit raises.All staff are relationship builders in their particular program or service area and they will:
- Welcome and greet each member in a pleasant and friendly manner (i.e., greet, smile and make eye contact);
- Be open and actively listen to questions, concerns and feelings of members and staff, dealing with them honestly, respectfully and positively ( Yes, I can help you; Yes, I hear your concern; Yes, I can register you for that class ; etc.);
- Handle multiple tasks in a calm and responsible way always affirming the member (e.g., sure, give me one moment and I can go find what you need. );
- Build member relationships by showing interest, caring and responsiveness (e.g., Let me find out and get back to you before you leave today. ); and
- Continuously inquire regarding the quality of member visits, offering additional activities/programs that may be of interest to the member (e.g., Did you know about our free Fit Start program? ).
