Salary: $33.09 - $39.60 HourlyLocation : Murray Hill Campus (Mount Morris)Job Type: Full-TimeJob Number: 202300275Department: Health/WIC 0010Opening Date: 10/07/2024Closing Date: 12/31/2024 11:59 PM EasternDescription This is a professional position that has a focus in the area of nutrition, especially relating to the Women, Infants and Children ( WIC ) program. Assignments are normally limited to those tasks which do not require advanced training or experience but require the application of the principles of behavioral sciences and nutrition in public health programs in order to encourage the improvement or maintenance of health. Work is performed in the office and in the field. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a designated supervisor. A WIC Program Nutritionist does related work as required. Examples of Duties
  • Assesses nutritional needs of clients by comparing dietary intake against standards for nutrition of healthy individuals;
  • Determines nutritional need and eligibility of individuals for participation in the WIC program;
  • Develops plan for providing nutritional care to clients;
  • Conducts individual and group counseling on maternal and child health nutrition;
  • Provides nutritional counseling to clients and clients' families regarding food available through the WIC program, nutrients provided by these foods, and additional foods required to assure satisfaction of complete nutrition needs;
  • Organizes or works with community groups and directs educational efforts to influence public attitudes and behavior with regard to given health needs;
  • Conducts health educational programs for community groups, schools, work sites and community agencies;
  • Prepares and/or develops educational material for use by program staff;
  • Prepares news releases and material for media;
  • Establishes and maintains liaison with community and governmental agencies to provide understanding and support of health department programs and services;
  • Does research relative to subject matter in order to have adequate knowledge regarding the subject;
  • Locates, screens, and evaluates new available educational materials;
  • Assists program director with statistical evaluation of program, writing of reports, budget preparation, grant writing, etc.;
  • Participates in studies and surveys of nutrition and health needs in the community, and evaluates the materials and methods used to determine the effectiveness of the program;
  • Conducts information sessions at clinic meetings to provide new patients with a better understanding of the basics of bodily function and health maintenance;
  • Oversees outreach activities;
  • May supervise staff assisting in outreach activities; and
  • Performs other related duties.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the basic principles, practices and techniques of public health education; good knowledge of nutrition; basic knowledge of health related issues; skill in educational techniques and methods of communication; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with community agencies and different groups of people; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; good judgment; initiative and resourcefulness; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position which may involve transporting laptop computers and associated equipment, file boxes and various audio visual equipment.
