ICE RINK ATTENDANT (SEASONAL PART-TIME)

This is seasonal specialist work in the City's winter recreation program.

An employee in this class develops, supervises, and instructs a winter recreation program in a particular recreational specialty area. The season for employees in this class in the Downtown Operations Division begins October 1 and ends April 1 each year.

Works under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or independently under general supervision.

Skates with skaters at City owned and operated ice rink at Lock 3 to insure safety. Assists skaters who have fallen down. Provides general first aid (bandages, ice packs, etc.) Responsible for skate rentals and rink maintenance. Shovels snow. Cleans and organizes equipment such as skates.

Develops, supervises and instructs programs for various recreational specialty areas such as sports and games, community events, and winter recreational activities. Plans and participates in publicizing programs and in stimulating participation. Responds to questions posed by participants, parents and/or volunteers of the program via telephone, meeting, or personal contact. Conducts constant evaluation of programs, staff and community involvement. Assists with events at Lock 3. Sets up and takes down chairs, tables and equipment. Answers telephone and uses voicemail. Inventories supplies and equipment. Lifts up to fifty (50) pounds of supplies and equipment to storage area and in and out of cars. Completes and files time sheet and related paperwork. Completes accident and/or incident reports. Performs related work as required.

Must be able to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends. Must occasionally perform difficult physical labor such as climbing, bending, kneeling and performing repetitive movements. List of essential functions available upon request.

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of experience in outdoor recreational activities, including ice skating. The examination will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's experience in the specialty area and their general recreation background.

Ice Rink Attendants require basic ice-skating ability. Attendants supervise skaters at the Lock 3 outdoor ice rink from late November through early February. Attendants must be available to work during normal operation hours (Thursday - Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.)

This is a classified position.

The candidates will be ranked in a standard manner based on information, records, and other data related to the candidate's ability to perform the duties of the position sought.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
