The Woody Nursery Production Intern will learn propagation, potting, labeling, record-keeping, pruning, and transplanting techniques through involvement with the day-to-day operation of Longwood Gardens' woody plant nursery.What you gain:
- Experience pruning, maintaining, and evaluating woody and herbaceous plant material
- Experience conducting general maintenance including weeding, mulching, irrigation installation and maintenance
- Experience preparing trees and shrubs for transport and installation in the display gardens by hand digging, ball-and-burlapping, and using a tree spade
- Experience learning about and propagating and grafting historic trees to support the Specimen Tree Replacement (STR) Plan
- Support the process of labeling plants and recordkeeping, including inventory and propagation records
- Opportunity to obtain a Pennsylvania Pesticide Applicator License
- Assist with projects and lighting wood plants for the Longwood Christmas indoor display
- Opportunities to interact with nearby nurseries during pick up plant material process
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in or completed an associate or bachelor's degree in horticulture or a related field
- Occasional weekend work is required
- The ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, lift 50 pounds, bending, stooping, and operating small equipment
- High degree of motivation, organization, and attention to detail, and willingness to work independently
- A valid driver's license
