Why does the job exist?The position exists to help beneficiaries of Social Security Disability Benefits obtain, regain, and maintain employment while working toward economic self-sufficiency. The Work Improvement and Opportunity Act requires participant of state vocational rehabilitation agencies ensure beneficiaries of Social Security Disability Benefits receive work incentive counseling or benefits advisement.The highly skilled professional staff help reduce the reliance on Social Security Disability and other public benefits, while removing the biggest fear about returning to work, the loss of benefits which have not been replaced by employer provided benefits. The position emphasizes NMDVR vision of assisting people with disability contribute to quality of their life and economic prosperity of the state. How does it get done?The employee will conduct initial interviews and assessments of people who receive Social Security Disability Benefits (SSDB) such as people on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) as well as other public benefits such as Medicaid, Supplement Nutrition Program, Housing and Urban development (HUD) benefits, and Veterans benefits. Once benefits are verified through coordination with stakeholders and initial assessments are completed, the employee will develop a report taking a snapshot of where the beneficiary is in their current situation. They then provide counseling and guidance to develop a written plan of action. The staff will monitor, following up with participant, applying for work incentives, assist in reporting wages to benefits providers, aid in filling out of paperwork, discuss the options with pro and cons. The process requires continuous updating. Who are the customers?Participants of New Mexico Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and on Social Security Disability Benefits aged 14 to 65, such as Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) who may or may not have other public benefits. Ideal CandidateAssociates degreeCurrent and active Community Partner Work Incentive Counselor (CPWIC or CWIC) certificate or intensive knowledge of Social Security Work IncentivesMust be able to obtain a suitability clearance from Social SecurityExperience working with people with disabilitiesSpanish speaker would be a plus. Minimum QualificationAssociate's degree in Social Sciences or Human Services and two (2) years of experience as a social worker or community coordinator and/or social worker assistant. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Working ConditionsWork is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage.
