WRITING & HUMANITIES DEVELOPMENT COORDINATORVSC UP-PAT BARGAINING UNIT, GRADE 11, NON-EXEMPTBASIC FUNCTIONCoordinate educational support services for students, with primary responsibility for coordinating the tutoring/mentor program in writing and humanities. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise peer and professional tutors and / or mentors. Review student requests for tutors and / or mentors and assign them. Work with faculty on behalf of students.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage and coordinate writing and humanities tutoring/mentor services. Oversee the tutor/student match-up process, schedule and assign tutors to the Writing Lab, hold staff meetings.
- Monitor student progress and maintain appropriate records on progress and tutoring/mentor activities. Prepare reports on students' progress and the delivery of services and maintain logs of student contacts.
- Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and collect timecards for peer and professional writing tutors.
- Identify students in need of tutoring/mentors, in coordination with other student success areas and faculty if needed.
- Perform administrative tasks associated with the Writing Lab including maintaining records for programs and services and for University and government reports; oversee maintenance of Writing Lab facility, equipment, and supplies.
- Plan, write, produce, and distribute Writing Lab schedules and brochures; design/revise various forms.
- Design and develop writing workshops and support services for under-prepared or writing anxious students. Prepare and present workshops and classes on writing, as well as other developmental workshops that provide students with non-cognitive skills development. Coordinate supplemental instruction in writing.
- Tutor students in writing, and other subjects as necessary; instruct in study skills, test taking, and basic computer skills.
- Confer regularly with supervisor, other Academic Support staff, faculty, and other University offices and personnel to plan, coordinate, and evaluate services and activities, exchange information, investigate and resolve problems, consult about individual students, refer students for assistance with special needs. Serve on University committees as appropriate.
- Demonstrate inclusivity and provide excellent customer service in all modalities, including in-person, telephone, e-mail, video call, live chat, texting, and the like.
- Consult with faculty about teaching writing, and publicize services through classroom visits, meetings with department chairs.
- Assist the Assistant Director of Academic Support or TRIO SSS Program Director with planning, coordinating, teaching, and evaluating the Summer Transition/Bridge Program, as well as organizing and attending cultural events with TRIO students.
- Assist the Assistant Director of Academic Support or TRIO SSS Program Director in providing financial aid, course selection, career, and graduate school information, and other programming vital to student development and success to TRIO students, if applicable.
- Keep abreast of current developments in the field. Attend professional meetings and conferences relevant to the job.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDDirect supervision by the Assistant Director of Academic Support and/or TRIO SSS Program Director.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITYSupervision of 15-50 peer and/or professional tutors, including providing performance evaluations.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degree in English, composition, or education required, plus two years relevant teaching experience in special education, adult education, or other appropriate field. Or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master's in English, composition, or education.
- Knowledge and experience supporting students with learning disabilities.
- Teaching or tutoring experience.
- Excellent administrative and supervisory skills.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIESKnowledge:
- Familiar with TRIO guidelines and promote TRIO Student Support Services mission on campus, if applicable.
- Knowledge of college level writing instruction and/or tutoring pedagogy.
- Knowledge of effective student development and learning strategies for college level writing and humanities courses, particularly for under-prepared or writing anxious students.
- Knowledge of existing, and comfort in learning new technologies and software for writing and humanities instruction and/or tutoring.
- Demonstrated ability to understand the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.
- Good understanding of college student support services as related to developmental education programs.
- Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University.
- Experience creating and running trainings and workshops for a diverse range of constitutes.
- Experience coordinating student support across multiple areas and when to escalate care.
- Knowledge to provide quality supervision, to both staff and student workers.
