Salary: $14.97 - $22.46 HourlyLocation : Clovis, NMJob Type: FULL-TIMEJob Number: 2024_09_16_3063Department: PUBLIC WORKSDivision: WASTE WATEROpening Date: 09/16/2024Job DescriptionUnder the general direction of the Wastewater Superintendent, this position is responsible for performing duties for operations, laboratory analysis, maintenance and repair of the wastewater treatment facilities and the collection system.**This position has been classified as a safety sensitive position and is subject to our drug testing policy to include pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident for the following prohibited substances: marijuana, amphetamines, opioids, phencyclidine (PCP), and cocaine, as well as any drug not approved for medical use by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.** Typical Duties
- Collects and conducts tests on wastewater and sludge including biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, suspended, dissolved and total solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand, TKN, nitrates, fecal coliform, calibration of dissolved oxygen and pH meters and other tests deemed necessary to maintain operational compliance. Collects samples for the WWTP operational controls and for the Industrial Pretreatment Program, and conducts test to monitor compliance with regulations. Inspects and maintains laboratory facility machinery and equipment.
- Inspects, maintains, and operates treatment facility machinery and equipment such as pumps, bar-screen, vacuums, aerators, compressors, motors, tractors, loaders, rotating bridges, composting equipment, and the belt press. Cleans equipment and filters, makes minor adjustments and repairs as required. Reads gauges, observes flow, and maintains daily logs of operations. Maintains records of collection and treatment processes maintenance and repairs. Performs preventive maintenance program on plant equipment, buildings, grounds and implements. Excavates with backhoe, bobcat, shovels, picks and other hand tools around sewer lines exposing problem areas. Identifies, through locates, gas, water, electrical, cable and fiber optic lines prior to digging out city sewer line. Leads daily activities of employees in the construction, maintenance and repair of the wastewater collection system and the treatment facility. Maintains WWTP landscaping, farm crops, and farm operations. Keeps current and up-to-date records on all O & M manuals for the wastewater division.
- Maintains orders and picks up spare parts, chemical inventories, supplies and materials needed for repair, maintenance and compliance of the wastewater division.
- Assists in the attainment of department goals and objectives related to Master, Strategic and Comprehensive Plans. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly with City Administration, department directors, consultants, vendors, staff, and the public to provide quality services. Participates various projects. Keeps immediate supervisor fully and accurately informed on issues. Identifies areas of concern for management for review and potential action.
- Leads and provides guidance to staff. Monitors work, trains, counsels, coaches, and instructs employees in order to meet established goals and objectives. Ensures adherence to established policies and procedures to remain in compliance with local, state, and federal rules, regulations, and policies. Enforces work safety practices and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Recommends adjustments to procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
- Assists and participates in the execution of short and long-range plans.
- Ensures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time.
Requirements
- No specific education requirements
- One (1) year of experience in the operation and maintenance of wastewater plants and facilities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that would likely produce the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid driver's license equivalent to a New Mexico Class B Commercial driver's license, including the appropriate endorsements (or able to obtain within six (6) months)
- New Mexico Level II Wastewater Operator Certificate.
Physical Requirements:Stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist. Lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight. Use repetitive hand movements, fine coordination and manual dexterity which permits the employee to operate office equipment and computer systems, hand and power tools. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing to permit the employee to discern verbal instructions, use a phone, radio, and communicate with others and drive and operate motorized vehicles. Sufficient visual acuity which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions.Working Conditions:Work typically performed outdoors in a wastewater setting with frequent travel to various sites and facilities. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Occasional work beyond normal business hours. Required to work in or with water, on slippery or uneven surfaces, airborne particles, potentially toxic and/or caustic chemicals, and extreme temperatures, travel from site to site, work around traffic. Use of safety shoes, glasses and other equipment is required.
