YouthBuild VISTA VAD 2024About Us:Queens Community House (QCH) is a multi-service settlement house dedicated to serving the diverse neighborhoods of Queens. With programs and services for children and youth, adults and families, and older adults, we impact over 25,000 individuals annually. Our mission is to provide individuals and families with the tools to enrich their lives and build healthy, inclusive communities. Through a broad network of programs across 40 sites in 15 neighborhoods, we offer crucial support systems to help Queens residents at every stage of life, empowering them to change their lives for the better and become active community participants.YouthBuild Program:The goal of the YouthBuild VISTA assignment is to increase the number of YouthBuild students advancing academically, earning a high school diploma or equivalency, succeeding in college, and/or gaining employment.VISTA Assignment:Activity 1: Create a Recruitment PlanTimeline: Initial two months of serviceStep 1: Assist with creating efficient systems and structures for the recruitment program with clear expectations and steps to support opportunity youth.Step 2: Meet monthly with the Program Assistant to identify and/or clarify issues regarding prospective YouthBuild candidates' enrollment progress, support needs, and personal/professional goals.Step 3: Assist with creating replicable social activities monthly to encourage outreach and recruitment of community members who understand the YouthBuild Program.Step 4: Attend all relevant young adult recruitment events (including some evenings and weekends) and work to build recruitment and outreach opportunities within communities and/or participant referral partnerships.Activity 2: Design a Monthly Engagement PlanTimeline: Throughout the year, with the plan template developed within the first two monthsStep 1: Review the monthly engagement plan.Step 2: Research best practices for engaging and staying in contact with YouthBuild alumni.Step 3: Document and evaluate the development and implementation of the alumni engagement strategy (e.g., paper and electronic surveys, staff-supported focus groups).Step 4: Support Outreach Specialist and Program Director by engaging community stakeholders/partners and assisting motivational speakers and trainers during in-services related to program and professional development sessions.Activity 3: Design and Implement an Ambassador Program ModelTimeline: First six months of serviceStep 1: Assist with creating and designing communication materials regarding recruitment.Step 2: Assist with implementing a consistent schedule and materials to maintain regular communication with prospective applicants.Step 3: Support Outreach Specialists in creating community communications via tips and ideas for recruitment and engagement.Step 4: Assist the Program Assistant with training student volunteers on properly marketing/promoting programs and recruiting qualified participants.Activity 4: Develop an Alumni NewsletterTimeline: Throughout the service yearStep 1: Assist with designing and creating communication materials regarding employment and educational opportunities for current members and alumni.Step 2: Assist in developing and implementing a consistent schedule and materials to maintain regular communication with alumni.Step 3: Develop a regular (monthly) newsletter for alumni with profiles, updates, and resources, or develop an alumni section in an existing newsletter.Activity 5: Develop an Alumni Program Evaluation ModelTimeline: First quarter of serviceStep 1: Coordinate with Program Assistant to organize Alumni Events.
