DOETo ApplyComplete the online application at Nature of WorkThe City of Des Moines Park and Recreation is hiring scorekeepers for the upcoming Youth Basketball Season. The Youth Basketball Program serves youth in grades Kindergarten through 6th grade. Having knowledge of the game of basketball and the ability to work with the coach and referee in tandem is crucial for this position. Scorekeepers work under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator or designee to help facilitate a successful recreation program. ScheduleExtra-hire positions during the basketball season from January through March; the hours vary, are typically on Saturdays with make-up games on weeknights. Hours vary from 0 to 20 hours per week and are dependent upon Des Moines Recreation Youth Basketball program needs. Essential Job Functions
  • Arrive to work location on time for set-up duties.
  • Keep score at youth basketball games.
  • Assist in emergency procedures.
  • Record fouls, points and penalties on log sheet and keep players, parents, referees and spectators informed of score.
  • Assist in putting away chairs, cleaning, and sanitizing the gym as required.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of:
  • Strong knowledge of the game of Basketball and the Des Moines Recreation Youth Basketball rules and program expectations specific to each youth basketball Division.
Ability to:
  • Ability to work in tandem with referees and coaches to ensure that scores are reported according to league rules.
  • Ability to recognize and correct safety hazards.
  • Effective oral communication skills with players, coaches, referees and spectators.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with players, coaches, referees and spectators.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds to put away chairs and clean up the gym.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule; hours are subject to change.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a scorekeeper.
  • Working with children and/or teens preferred.
  • A combination of experience and training enabling the individual to perform the essential functions of a position may be considered.
Special Requirements
  • Must be 15 ½ years of age.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR Card within 30 days of employment.
  • Employment is contingent upon passing a criminal history background check.
  • Because of the known effects of tobacco use, the City of Des Moines does not hire applicants who use tobacco products.
Work Environment and Physical Abilities
  • Indoor work environment. The ability to travel to off-site program locations is required. Locations will vary, but they are within the City of Des Moines. The position requires the ability to speak and hear to exchange information, sit for extended periods of time, run, bend, stretch and lift up to 50 pounds.
