Position Title: Youth Services Assistant Hours /FLSA status: Non-Exempt Part-time 20 hours per week Must be able to work a varied schedule, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. Starting Hourly Wage: $15.50 hourly Reports to: Head of Youth Services/Assistant Manager Staff Supervised: None Positions Summary: Plans and implements programming for youth, birth through teens, in addition to providing reference and reader's advisory to the public and assisting with collection duties for children and teens. Cooperates as a team member with all library staff in performing any duty essential to the achievement of efficient library operations Essential Job Functions: This list is illustrative, but not exhaustive for this position.
- Plans and implements programming for youth, birth through teen.
- Plans, conducts and evaluates programming for youth, birth through teens, families and adults who work with children, both in the library and the community.
- Assists with publicizing library programs, materials, and services by supplying content to the Marketing Department for creating promotional materials, may also create local displays.
- Works with community groups, including schools and day cares, to provide materials and programs to encourage an appreciation of reading and literature.
- May assist with outreach duties such as delivering book kits to daycares. Helps to develop a working relationship with area schools.
- Attends conferences, workshops and committee meetings and represents the library in a professional capacity in the community.
- Performs direct public service by working a reference desk.
- Offers specialized knowledge of juvenile and young adult materials, providing reference and reader's advisory service.
- Willing to learn reference skills and provide direct research assistance to the public in person, by phone and online using print and electronic sources.
- Helps the public find library materials to read, listen to or view.
- Participates in training patrons to use the library catalog, computers, internet and e-content devices.
- Assists in weeding and maintaining the children's and teen collection.
- Pulls themed books for educator requests.
- Keeps current with popular children's media and suggests titles for purchase.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics: - Ability to relate well with staff and public, especially young adults and children.
- General knowledge of the library and children's and teen literature
- Excellent computer skills.
- Ability to speak and write effectively and present in front of children, teens, teachers and parents.
- Willingness to learn reference skills and work with new technologies.
- Possess reliable work habits.
- Willingness and adaptability to work in a changing work environment.
- Safely observes PERRP procedures.
Minimum Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements: - Bachelor's Degree
- Successful completion of background check.
Physical Requirements: - Ability to operate objects, tools, or controls - including computers, phones, and office equipment
- Competence in completing tasks that involve reading or visual inspection, with or without visual aids.
- This position requires alternate stationary and mobile activities.
- Must be able to bend, reach, and have the ability to lift up to 40 pounds or more on occasion
Pay Range: $15.50 per hour
