Job Type Full-timeDescriptionJob Summary:The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing the safety programs and policies within the building materials industry. This role ensures that all operations adhere to safety regulations and standards, fostering a safe working environment to minimize risks and accidents. The Safety Manager will work closely with all levels of staff to promote a culture of safety and compliance.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.
  • Safety Program Development: Design, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs and procedures specific to the building material industry to ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, state, and local regulations.
  • DOT Compliance: Ensure adherence to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations related to transportation, vehicle safety, and driver qualifications. Oversee the maintenance of driver logs, vehicle inspections, and compliance with hours-of-service rules.
  • Workers' Compensation Management: Oversee the workers' compensation program, including claims management and reporting. Work with insurance carriers and medical providers to facilitate timely and accurate claim processing and employee return-to-work programs.
  • General Liability Management: Oversee general liability insurance coverage, ensuring that policies are adequate for the organization's operations and that risks are appropriately mitigated. Review incidents and claims to reduce future liabilities.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Training and Education: Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees, including new hire orientations, ongoing safety education, and emergency response drills.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate workplace accidents and incidents, prepare detailed reports, and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all safety practices comply with federal, state, and local safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Safety Culture Promotion: Promote a culture of safety within the organization through effective communication, leadership, and engagement with employees.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and up-to-date safety records, including OSHA 300 logs, incident reports, training logs, and safety performance metrics.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency preparedness plans, including fire, chemical spills, and natural disasters, and ensure readiness through drills and coordination with emergency services.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other departments to integrate safety practices into daily operations and assist in addressing safety concerns.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay current with industry trends, best practices, and emerging safety technologies to continually improve the company's safety programs.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Engineering, or a related field or 3-5 years of experience in a safety management or related field. Relevant safety certifications can be beneficial.
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years of experience in safety management within the lumber industry or a similar manufacturing environment, with demonstrated success in safety program development and incident management.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations, DOT compliance, general liability, and workers' compensation. Strong understanding of risk management practices specific to the lumber industry.
  • Skills: Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills. Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external regulatory agencies.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in safety management software and tools, as well as standard office software (e.g., MS Office).
  • Certifications: OSHA certification, First Aid/CPR, and other relevant safety training certifications are preferred.
